00:00The Vice President is on her way to London.
00:02Does she know about me?
00:04That she's auditioning for her job.
00:06Grace Penn, the Vice President, was the seed that we planted in the very beginning.
00:09And we felt like she was sort of there for us when we were ready for a big story to come in.
00:13She's a heavy hitter. She arrives and she's the full package.
00:16And for Kate, it's inspiring to see this woman with such power.
00:21I hear you want to be Vice President.
00:23If you have any advice, I'd love to hear it.
00:26You probably think your hair says you're too busy serving your country to get a blowout.
00:30But it reads as bedhead.
00:32Which sends a signal I think in this case is better unsent.
00:35When I saw that Debra had created The Diplomat, I just knew it was going to be a show that I'd love to watch.
00:40And I did. I fell in love with it from the first episode.
00:43So it was a huge compliment to me coming to join this cast.
00:46To have Alison Janney come into this in second season just feels like such a vote of confidence in this show too.
00:52Because she's such a fantastic actress.
00:55Looks like Peter Cottontail, but she's a climber.
00:57I think you're misunderstanding.
00:59She should watch herself.
01:01This is a woman who's very formidable. A very seasoned politician.
01:05And she's usually the smartest person in the room.
01:07Grace comes to address an issue that she wants cleaned up.
01:11But also she's there to check out Kate.
01:14And trouble ensues.
01:16This is my game board. The whole goddamn thing.
01:21This is yours.
01:23Keep your eyes on your own paper.
01:24We wanted a character that was not a villain.
01:27That was impressive and good.
01:29And we wanted to see how that person had set in motion this horrible chain of events.
01:35Grace Penn makes a huge impact.
01:37She's part of all the twists and turns and especially the cliffhanger at the end.
01:41So I'm thankful that we got Alison Janney because she's just incredible.
01:47Working with anyone as talented as Alison is,
01:50everyone has to sort of raise their game every time that she's on set.
01:53But she fitted in so easily.
01:55She's perfect and she just has such a quick mind about her.
01:58And she's funny and mischievous.
02:01And all the things that fit with Debra Kahn's writing.
02:04The Grace Penn story is just tailor made for an actress of her caliber.
02:09And it's a real joy and a real gift to be able to have her go on a journey with these characters.
02:14To minimize risk, the Prime Minister can either tell the truth but tell it slowly.
02:18Or he can keep it quiet.
02:20What did you pick?
02:22I'm sorry?
02:24I'm sorry. I'm finishing your sentences.
02:27My press team calls it cooperative overlapping.
02:30But if they weren't my press team, they'd call it rude.
02:44.
