00:00Ever wonder how Kamala Harris gets that patented presidential glow? Turns out it doesn't take much,
00:06and the presidential candidate looks flawless, both with and without makeup.
00:10Vice President Kamala Harris had to switch gears quickly in July 2024,
00:14when President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential election and endorsed her as his
00:18replacement. Harris and her vice presidential pick, Tim Walz, began campaigning a lot after then.
00:25We are joyful warriors. Joyful warriors."
00:31So many public appearances as a vice president and a presidential candidate means public scrutiny,
00:36which is something Harris is likely used to after such a long career in politics.
00:41But speaking of appearances, Harris always looks put together and polished,
00:45down to the last swipe of makeup. Before becoming vice president, however,
00:49Harris showed her more casual side on social media and shared some makeup-free snapshots,
00:54highlighting her natural beauty. In November 2018 for Thanksgiving, Harris took to ex,
00:59formerly Twitter, to share two makeup-free casual pictures from pre-dinner. In one of the pictures,
01:05she was holding up a pan to show off her cooking candy work. In the other picture,
01:08she prepared a table with a tablecloth. In the caption, Harris wrote,
01:12"'We're all up early this Thanksgiving, getting the table ready and preparing food for dinner.
01:17The meal wouldn't be complete without my cornbread dressing.'"
01:20In an interview a few years later, Harris talked about her skincare routine and how she manages
01:25her glowing skin. In 2019, before Joe Biden became the Democratic nominee and chose Harris
01:31as his running mate, the then-senator sat down with Cosmopolitan to discuss her presidential
01:36campaign. When interviewer Jessica Pels also asked for her skincare secrets, Harris said
01:41Cetaphil was the brand she liked to use. She had been using the makeup wipes during the campaign
01:46for the election, but typically she used the skin cleanser from the brand. She said,
01:50"'And then I have just a regular moisturizer. And that's it.'"
01:53Harris' makeup-free skin looked completely clear in photos
01:56shared on her Facebook page on Christmas 2018. A smiling Kamala stood beside her sister,
02:01Maya Harris, while Maya was cooking. In the caption, she wrote,
02:05"'We started the day with tamales. And chili relleno. Made with my mother's recipe.
02:10And now we're about to eat my sister's delicious gumbo that she makes every year.
02:14Merry Christmas to all!'
02:16"'We celebrate Christmas. We celebrate the birth of Jesus. We celebrate the hope of this moment.'"
02:24A few months after President Joe Biden's win in 2020,
02:28Vice President Kamala Harris was featured on the cover of Vogue.
02:31Markeia James, the makeup artist on that shoot, spoke to her alma mater,
02:35Winston-Salem State University, and said it was wonderful doing Harris' makeup. James said,
02:41"'For my entire career, I've had the vision of working with powerful women of color.
02:45This moment was literally my vision coming to life,
02:48and I feel so blessed to be a part of such a historical moment.'"
02:51James also spoke about her process, which doesn't involve anything drastic.
02:56"'I never want to change how they naturally look, but more so bring out their best features.
03:01I believe that makeup should always be an enhancement of your natural beauty.'"
03:05In 2021, Harris' makeup artist, Sam Fine,
03:08spoke to HelloGiggles about his philosophy for the makeup of his clients in politics,
03:12since he also did makeup for former first lady Michelle Obama.
03:16He felt similarly to James on how makeup shouldn't be overpowering, saying,
03:20"'As a political figure, you can't let makeup take the main stage
03:23when you have a crucial message to deliver. So it's all about elegance and beauty basics.'"
03:28He also listed some of Obama and Harris' beauty staples, saying, quote,
03:32"'Both Michelle and Kamala go for voluminous lashes, feathered brows,
03:36radiant complexions, and neutral sheer lip shades.'"
