The Fisheries Department has reported a slight decrease in illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing activities, including the intrusion of foreign vessels into national waters.

Speaking at the World Fisheries Day 2024 launch on Saturday (Nov 2), director-general Datuk Adnan Hussain noted that the department is working on amending the Fisheries Act 1985 to introduce stricter penalties and enhance measures to prevent such intrusions.

01:36For this matter, the Ministry of Fisheries is trying to amend the 1985 Act.
01:42First, to give a heavier sentence for the crimes committed under this Act.
01:51Second, to allow us to better control the import or smuggling of these vessels
01:58by imposing a heavier sentence on them.
02:02And also to ensure that other vessels can also be controlled
02:06rather than committing crimes that can cause pressure on other traditional vessels.
