00:00Well, I'm back for another instalment of Family Adventures, a little guide into road trips
00:10with your family.
00:11Here we are on the top of an absolute gem of the Southern Riverina, can you guess where
00:17it is?
00:18Anyway, stay with me and we'll explore this place and everything it has to offer.
00:30Here we go again, on another adventure.
00:38Just come out, been through Jindra, been through Walla, got a coffee at the Fox and Brew, and
00:46got a bacon egg roll at the food meal in Walla, I think I'm heading my way around the area.
00:57Just at the Walla Swamp at the moment, so I've grown up in the area my whole life and
01:04never been into the Walla Swamp, so just checking it out now.
01:09It's quite a surreal landscape down on the dried swamp, these big old gum trees.
01:15Anyway, now we're just on to the main destination for the day, just up the road, anyone that's
01:22from here probably knows where we're going, but yeah, looking forward to it.
01:29So here we are at Wally's Lookout, one of his favourite spots, but seriously, how on
01:38earth do these plants grow here?
01:40They grow down the side of the rock, in the lichen and the dirt, but anyway, bit of a
01:46windy old day, but that seems to be the way it is.
01:49Anyway, let's have a look.
01:51Wally's Lookout gets its name from the bloodthirsty bushranger of the 1800s, Dan Morgan, who caused
01:57trouble for farmers and police alike, using the ridgeline as a vantage point to see approaching
02:03authorities and hide in the rocks.
02:05You can also visit the memorials of two of his victims, John McLean Memorial in Cockham
02:12and Sergeant Smyth Memorial in Henty.
02:15The lookout itself is described as a conglomerate white granite formation, which is the core
02:20of an extinct volcano.
02:22Settlers first arrived in 1842, at which point the local indigenous people were using it
02:28as a campsite.
02:29In the 1890s, the site was used for local shearers to strike, and in the 20th century
02:35local farmers built the first ladder to the top to use the height of spotting fires.
02:40I would describe Morgan's Lookout as an absolute ideal place to bring lunch, come out with
02:47the kids, let them explore, crawl through the rocks, find the secret cubby holes and
02:54yeah, just get lost.
02:56I feel like these kind of places are hidden gems in a way because it's a Sunday afternoon,
03:02I'm the only person here, granted there was two other cars here when I first got here
03:07but they're gone now.
03:08Like, I just think it's an amazing place and it's underutilised.
03:12It's 40 minutes from Albury but yeah, head out here, it's worth the trip, you'll have
03:19lots of fun, the kids will never forget it and it's a great spot.
03:24One thing I'd say for all the camera buffs out there, it's not Mount Buffalo but it still
03:29is a beautiful place.
03:30You have to look for the beauty in the little things out here a bit more.
03:34So it's a shame about the big old tower on top but I suppose without it we don't have
03:38a view but it also ruins the iconic photo.
03:43Anyway, it's been nice out here, bring the Bushmans if you come, that's one thing I've
03:48probably learnt.
03:49It's probably a great spot to come in the cooler months, less worry about flies and
03:55possibly snakes.
03:56And just one note to the Greater Hume Council, it would be great if someone came out here
04:01and sprayed a few blackberries and maybe did a bit of whippersnippering.
04:05It is a great place and we don't want to see it overrun with evasive species.
04:17So I think I could start a sub-category in this video series about historic buildings
04:22that are shut.
04:24Here I am at Warbundjeri Pub and sadly the doors are closed.
04:29Let's hope they can get it going soon.
04:32So that's the end of another video.
04:34I hope you enjoyed it.
04:35The Southern Riverina from a All-Broodongas perspective gets overlooked because it's so
04:40easy to head up towards Yakinder and Beachworth kind of way bright.
04:44But there's plenty of good little spots just like this one to come and have a look and
04:50take the family.
