00:00Okay, well, let's start this interview with José Piñero, top professional Latino coach and coaches,
00:12personal and professional, there are many out there, but José is very, very different and we will see
00:19why in this conversation. Welcome, how are you? Thank you very much for having me here, a pleasure
00:25to speak with you and with people in Spanish. Yes, well, let's start. You focus a lot on giving
00:32professional support, advice and help to people who already have a certain professional career in
00:40the United States. Before we start with the questions, which are quite to the point, I want
00:46you to tell us a little bit about your story so that people know who you are. Sure, yes, look,
00:51I am José Piñero and I am what is called a career and business coach and my mission in life is
00:58very simple. I want to educate, empower and raise one million Latinos in the United States. The way
01:05I do this, one million, that is the goal I have in my life. Why did you set that goal? Because I have seen it
01:10out there and I said, where did you get that number from? Well, in the United States there are about 60 million Latinos,
01:16so I'm just saying that I'm going to help one out of 60, so it's not that big. But look,
01:21I think that Latinos deserve to reach the appropriate and correct place in society in
01:29the United States. And the way to do that is by helping us understand how to achieve more success,
01:35empower ourselves, what things work. Look, many times we think, I would have liked
01:42if someone had given me this advice five years ago, ten years ago. And this is the reason why
01:47I do coaching and all these seminars. I learned there by doing bad things, making mistakes. I
01:54was in corporate work for more than 20 years and it went well for me at times, it didn't go so well for me
02:00at other times. And what I learned was, wow, there is no information, the best practices, the advice
02:09there, so that our people understand how to appear, how to act, how to do the job and how to
02:17really achieve more success. So for about eight years I have dedicated my life to taking this
02:22message, to give seminars, to give coaching, to give training, so that people like you and me
02:27can be the example for the generation that comes after. Because I also feel that we as
02:34Hispanics are already in a moment in which we are second, third generation. And yes, some of us have
02:39the fortune of going to college, some of us even have the fortune of being a master, of buying a
02:45house, all those bases to take off. But many times we don't do it, we are not taking off. And that is
02:52the key, that is the mystery that we are going to unmask today here with some very practical tips
02:57that you are going to give us. The first question is why, for example, someone has been working for a while
03:04in a position, whether it is corporate or wherever. Why has that person not received a promotion?
03:11What is needed to receive a promotion? Is it magic? Is it outdated? Do you have to ask for it? I think
03:21we bring like many vices learned from our culture when it comes to facing them. Absolutely, look,
03:28values and advice and our culture play a very important role. Look, typically if we think
03:36what our parents, mothers, grandparents have told us, look son, work hard, keep your head down,
03:44don't complain, don't create problems and stay there. What happens? The best jobs, the increases,
03:52the promotions, the best projects are going to be given to another person. Why? Because we have
03:59to take control of our career. What does that mean? Ensuring that we are working on
04:06projects where we can show tangible and visible results. One thing that I teach
04:12in all seminars and coaching is that everyone, all people who are in a job have to learn
04:19not only to do the job, but also to handle their boss. You have to handle your boss.
04:25What does that mean? Keep him informed, informed. Ask for advice. Align your goals. Before starting
04:32a big project, talk to your boss. Look, this is the goal, this is the goal, this is the approach
04:38that I am going to use. Does it sound good? Yes. Perfect. What advice do you give me when I am going to do this?
04:45And for example, we think, look, if I just do the job, they will reward me. The second part is this,
04:52as you say, we have to ask, we have to tell our boss and this is the magic phrase that I use.
04:58Two things. Number one, I want to continue growing my career here in this company. That's the first thing
05:04you say. The second thing you say, and I also want to continue increasing the impact and the benefit that I
05:11generate for this organization. And then you ask your boss, how can we work, you and me,
05:18so that you can recommend my increase or my promotion in the next cycle? And that is the
05:25beginning of a conversation that is going to be a conversation from many parts through typically
05:30six months. But if you don't say that, your boss is going to think, ah, Mayra is happy, Mayra doesn't complain,
05:37leave her alone. And when the time comes for a reward, for an increase, for a promotion, what happens?
05:42They give it to someone else. So we have to ask for the costs, we have to manage our career, we have to
05:48help our bosses become more successful. And the other thing that affects us a lot,
05:53as Latinos, we are too humble. It is difficult for us to announce or communicate what we have done.
06:00We have to market our achievements, market the results that we have achieved. And we can do it
06:07in a very, very good way, which is being direct, precise, without adjectives. But talk about the numbers,
06:15talk about the activities, talk about the results. And you have to let your boss and your boss's boss
06:22know, because these are the two people who are going to have more control over your career.
06:27So in the seminars, in the talks and speeches that I do, and in coaching, we work a lot on
06:32how to help people, Latinos, feel comfortable having this conversation and
06:38carrying this dialogue through the months.
