Dog with Dementia: Know the Signs

Find out if your dog has dementia

Disorientation
Dogs with dementia can often get lost around the house, appearing to not know the place where they live very well, and may get stuck behind furniture or lose their sense of height when jumping on elevated surfaces.
Disorientation also causes the animal to switch from day to night, waking up during the night and sleeping excessively during the day.

Memory loss
The animal may forget familiar faces and smells, ceasing to recognize people nearby. Habits that have been taught throughout life can also become confused in the dog's memory, causing them to no longer obey commands or forget where to do their business.

Personality changes
A dog affected by dementia can drastically change its personality, becoming more fearful or needy, getting closer to people, or moving away from people who used to have very close and constant interaction and affection.

Changes in sleep patterns
Dogs have a day-night rhythm similar to ours, although they need to sleep more throughout the day. This behavior may change in dogs with dementia. In other words, they sleep more during the day and have more waking moments at night. Long-term insomnia can also occur at night.

Not relieving yourself abroad
Eliminating in the appropriate places is a learned behavior. But in the case of Alzheimer's disease, dogs may forget and urinate repeatedly indoors. This behavior often manifests itself without any indication.
