00:00Your gauging capacity is amazing sir, the trailer hasn't come yet but you are somewhere right.
00:13I am playing a beat reporter to begin with called Samar Kumar and starts off like any youngster as a beat reporter and then you see his journey throughout the film.
00:29He is a very integrity person, honest person and he is at that very naive young age wherein he is forming his own judgements through experiences.
00:45And there is an incident which changes his life overnight which is the burning of the Sabarmati Express.
00:54So in the gist I can only say this and as I said starts off as a beat reporter and then you see his entire journey through the entirety of the film.
01:06So my character is this young girl, young blood, wants to be this really big news reporter, looks up to this persona that she wants to be.
01:18And it is said that if you don't meet your idols you will mostly be disappointed. So my character is something like this.
01:29In what search do I go and where do I reach? My entire journey is an arc of a character where you decide to stick to the truth and no matter what happens I want to stick to it.
01:39So she makes a moral ground for herself where she stands by it and when she decides that no matter what happens I have to make it and I have to project the truth out.
01:49That also starts off like every journalist. Like in this film the way we perceive English and Hindi media is shown through this film.
02:01I am a journalist and I want to be an English journalist because it is shown to be cool. But do you want to be cool or do you want to tell the truth?
02:13So you try and figure that out. You also see the power politics that runs in media houses.
02:19So there is a lot that is shown through the characters of all of us apart from the Godhra incident at the back of it.
02:31Firstly, I am not playing an editor. I am also a reporter. You also see their journey because it is a true story and it is based through some years.
02:43But I think what I can say about my character Maneka Rajpurohit is that when you see her, please don't see her as a human being.
02:53See her as a system. Only then you will understand. Otherwise you will miss it because there are a lot of things that we can't say.
03:01Because you can't spoon feed in intelligent writing. But if you see this character as a system, you will understand a lot of things.
03:10And it will stop being that she is a human being. This was a revelation for me when I portrayed this character.
03:19I can't talk about a lot of things openly right now. Maybe after the release I will be able to talk about it.
03:26But a lot of things were a revelation for me that how someone is in such a powerful position but still there are so many agendas that drive you.
03:37And somewhere in the journey, one is when you start and the other is when you get a stable job.
03:45And after that you somehow forget your morals or you don't. You tweak your morals.
03:52And then you smartly say to yourself that I am still moralistic. It's all about perspective.
04:01So it's an interesting character. And he is a reporter. And there are all kinds of reporters.
04:08So I thought Rajput Rohit was a very important character for me.
04:12Everybody would want to play the hero. But it's also important to show a mirror to society.
04:21See how you put power on people. And playing that without judgement was very interesting for me.
04:32So this was my first time with Ridhi. And of course I have known her. She is a massive name in television.
04:42I also had the good fortune of working with her right before Sabarmati.
04:47So Sabarmati was offered to the both of us while we were actually filming for another film called Talaq Home Ek.
04:54I know her very well. So it really gets easier for you to go out there and play such a complex part.
05:01Especially when it is inspired by true incidents.
05:04And especially when it is such a pivotal part in our socio-political fabric.
05:09Which is the Godhra incident.
05:12There was a lot of research into it. A lot of what we eventually did in front of the camera was made easier by
05:19the amount of prep we did, the amount of research we did.
05:23But eventually when you are with your co-actors in front of the camera, you are feeding off each other's energy as you so rightly put it.
05:29So I had a great time working with them.
05:32And coming back to different spectrums of ideology.
05:37I think it was there in the writing itself.
05:44Because it is such a complex narrative. Because as I said it is such a pivotal point in our modern history.
05:50It was imperative that we showed all possible ideologies which were actually prevalent at that point in time.
05:58Which also currently exist as we speak.
06:02Because it is such an important incident, we all know that the initial few years from 2002 to up until 2008 to 2010.
06:12There were many different perspectives to this one particular incident.
06:17And a lot of attention was unfortunately given to the unfortunate riots that took place.
06:24But not to the genesis of the larger problem.
06:28Not to the cause of it, but to the effect of it as she says.
06:32So it was complex. Easier to sort of work with like-minded people like Riddhi and Rashi.
06:39And the entire support staff in the team.
06:42But the ideological spectrums differ because it is representative of the reality of the time.
06:47And even the world that we live in.
06:53Like Vikrant said, it was our second collaboration, the Sabarmati report.
06:57I have always known him as a very good actor, but I got to know him as a person and what he stands for even as an actor.
07:03I think he is a very credible actor.
07:06When he chose Sabarmati, half of my reason was Vikrant that I want to do this film because I will get to work with him.
07:12I had of course known about Riddhi, but I hadn't worked with her before.
07:15And I think while we came on set, and I know how much research also she does before she comes on board.
07:22Like she knew a lot of the stuff that was already in our script.
07:25And that shows how much she is passionate about the characters that she is playing.
07:30She brought a lot of her personality also into the character.
07:33And I saw that it is not easy to play the character that she is playing.
07:37It takes guts to play that character.
07:39Like she said, you see the system that she represents and don't see her as that character.
07:46It is very important for people because people judge very quickly.
07:50But if you look at her perspective, it was difficult to write this story.
07:54And the character that she accepted, I think it is a very challenging character to play.
08:00And a lot of actors will back out.
08:02But I have to give it to her that she chose it, she played it the way she played it.
08:06And there is a respect that comes automatically.
08:08And I think somewhere I would just call her ma'am.
08:12Because that respect comes when you are playing a character like that.
08:18And I feel like she has done a fabulous job in the film.
08:21So whenever you watch the film, remember that she is a fabulous actor.
08:25Don't judge her by her character because it is a very difficult character to play.
08:28That's what we want to say.
08:30So I think it is always a pleasure to work with very good actors
08:34because you learn so much from them.
08:36You learn from the way they see things.
08:38And both of them are very passionate actors.
08:40So for me it was a very good experience.
08:42She will never praise herself.
08:44No, I am also good.
08:46She is such a big superstar down south.
08:51I know her as a friend, I can tell you.
08:54She is a massive star but not an ounce of that baggage.
08:59When she came to Hindi cinema, she did Rudra, Farzi, Yodha,
09:09she did Madras Cafe.
09:16And she considers herself a newcomer here.
09:20There is absolutely no baggage.
09:22Absolute professional, a treat to work with.
09:25Because she can't praise herself.
09:27I do not want to take her greatness away from her modesty.
09:32She is a phenomenal actor.
09:34And whatever she said about Rashi is also true.
09:37I said this a few days ago that when we were doing TV together,
09:42there were 2-3 actresses with whom I wanted to work.
09:46Because Maryada was such a big show, it was going on at my house.
09:49I used to shoot myself but I know my family watches other shows with my serials.
09:54I never got a chance to work with them.
09:56Finally got the opportunity.
09:58Really excited.
10:05No, not at all.
10:07There is a beautiful downward gradual decline.
10:12And I think now we are somewhere in the ruts of things.
10:16In the 80s and 90s, if we used to sit at home and watch the news,
10:25we used to become serious.
10:27Listen to everything they are saying.
10:30Now they shout and talk.
10:32Now we are more civil than people we see on television.
10:38Or if you watch the news, you think I don't believe this,
10:43I do my own research.
10:45Let me find out myself what is true and what is false.
10:48And now with so much information that is available,
10:52we watch podcasts on YouTube,
10:54we see an influencer standing here and telling us to think this and that.
10:59Then you come to know that there is an agenda behind them.
11:03So it's now, I mean, I would say it's Kalyug.
11:08It's absolute Kalyug.
11:10We are in it.
11:11It's not the beginning, it's not that.
11:12This is Kalyug.
11:14The deceit will look good if it is packaged well.
11:19And the truth, because it is simple, it is ordinary,
11:24it will not be understood at all.
