00:00Here's all you need to know about Manchester's transport news this week.
00:03Let's start with the roads.
00:05An announcement that went under the radar in last week's budget speech is that Greater
00:08Manchester is set to be the beneficiary of substantial investment in its transport links.
00:13This is true of trains, with services set to run from Manchester Victoria to Staly Bridge
00:16this year, and Wigan set to be connected to Bolton as well in the future.
00:20But the big commitment was the one to speed up the travel over towards the Peak District.
00:25Now while there's no mention of exactly how this commitment will be properly implemented,
00:28the route to Sheffield has been labelled as a major transport project.
00:32The difference the connecting Manchester and Sheffield will make is substantial.
00:36With both cities being major centres for investment and cultural capital, an easier route in between
00:40the two will be a substantial boon to the local economy of each.
00:43There are also significant roadworks planned at a major Salford Junction, with Salford
00:46Council drawing up plans to create better crossing points and upgrading the traffic
00:50lines at Weest Lane and the Liverpool Street Junction.
00:53Work is set to begin in March 2025 and will hopefully be finished by the end of Spring,
00:57with provisions put in place to make it a safer area for pedestrian crossings and also
01:01allow cyclists to use the junction with greater ease.
01:04The work is set to cost around £800,000.
01:08Also on public transport, we'll have an explainer out on this a little bit later in
01:11the week to go more in depth, but Andy Burnham has decided to continue the £2 bus ticket
01:16cap in Greater Manchester, despite the rest of the country being raised up to £3, which
01:20is positive news for commuters of the region.
01:22Also Rita Ora has been at the centre of some Metrolink news, with the pop icon's voice
01:26being used to read out safety information along certain stops on the travel network
01:30around the city.
01:32Travellers from St Peter's Square may also notice that the stations there have been given
01:35a little makeover ahead of the MTV EMAs.
01:38Finally, Manchester Airport is set to clamp down on rogue parking traders by making car
01:42park providers sign up for a new accredited airport parking scheme, which will seek to
01:46stamp out unethical practices and have a clear complaints process.
01:50It should prevent travellers from being left with damaged vehicles or unnecessarily large
01:53bills by unethical providers.
01:56That's all for now, follow Manchester World for more and we look forward to seeing you
01:59again soon.
