00:00Tata Steel's Port Talbot plans, construction of the first new Mersey Ferry in 60 years
00:06and Yorkshire's rich tech entrepreneurs all feature in today's business briefing.
00:17So Stephen, what has caught your eye today?
00:19Well, big news in Wales. We've got Tata Steel's plans for its Port Talbot facility
00:25have moved forward. They've submitted a hybrid planning application to Neath Port Talbot Council
00:31for the electric arc furnace based steel making plans they've got there for that steelworks. So
00:36that move follows a grant funding agreement with the UK government as well as a design supply
00:42agreement with Tenova. The company are hoping the plans will secure the future of the Port Talbot
00:51as well as helping it to decarbonise its steel making operations.
00:56The submission follows a full consultation featuring members of the local community in
01:00Port Talbot as well as former steelworkers, the employees of the Port Talbot steelworks.
01:07It's been a tough time for Port Talbot. It has recently been confirmed that 2,000 jobs will be
01:12lost when the last blast furnace is closed there. So hopefully this move will secure the future of
01:19the plant and the steel making industry in South Wales, but it's obviously very important.
01:24Yeah, of course. Great. Well, sticking with manufacturing news then, the Mayor of Liverpool,
01:29Steve Rotherham, he announced that construction is now underway for the first new Mersey Ferry
01:35in more than 60 years. So the brand new ferry is coming to the Mersey waters and it marks the
01:41beginning of an exciting new chapter for the iconic ferries which have been sailing on the
01:46Mersey River for more than 800 years. So the construction is happening at Camel Laird's
01:52Birkenhead facility and the announcement also follows last month's unveiling of the first
01:58images that were showing what passengers can expect when they embark on the new boat.
02:04So it's been designed to offer a world-class experience to both everyday passengers and
02:09event-goers with its large open plan deck and smaller, more intimate event spaces for
02:17corporate functions and private parties. And the new ferry is expected to set sail by summer 2026.
02:25Okay, well I'm keeping an eye out for tickets then. Yes, definitely do.
02:29Well, in Yorkshire this week we've been revealing details of our Yorkshire and Humber
02:32rich list. We've taken a look so far at the full top 50, we've taken a look at some of the
02:39wealthiest female entrepreneurs and some of the wealthiest people under 42 years of age. Today
02:45we've got a story on the top names from the technology sector. So Robert Watts, who also
02:50compiles the Sunday Times rich list, he's put together a top 10. That features a host of
02:55well-known names, so you've got people behind companies such as BJSS, Big Change, Fintel,
03:01so yeah, huge companies for the Yorkshire region. I'm sure you'll all be familiar with the names on
03:06there. Ian Leitch, who's over in Yorkshire, has also been speaking to some of the people on the
03:12list, so you can look out for their comments next week. I'm sure they'll have some useful tips for
03:17people. The full list is also available in the November edition of Yorkshire Business Insider,
03:24which is available now. Brilliant. Well, down in the southwest then, the Global Property
03:31Consultancy, CBRE, is to relocate its southwest and Wales teams to a prominent office development
03:38in Bristol. So CBRE will be taking space on the first floor of the EQ development on Victoria
03:45Street. It encompasses 7,500 square foot, which overlooks the building's atrium. So the space
03:53will be occupied by CBRE employees and relocating from the current office in Clifton, and it has
04:01recently seen a headcount growth from 50 to more than 90. So CBRE's management team will be managing
04:08the fit out of the workspace, and the move is expected to take place in 2025, the second
04:14quarter of 2025. Yeah, great stuff. Absolutely. Well, for more on those stories, you can visit
04:19insidermedia.com. A bunch of more stories on there as well. You can also sign up to our
