00:00And after President-elect Donald Trump won, many are asking and worrying about what will be the policy of US President Trump when it comes to migrants in America.
00:09That's what Professor Antonio Contreras is going to tell us in Punto de Vista, Professor.
00:19Thank you very much and good morning, Diane.
00:23There are 4.1 million Filipinos in America.
00:28And here in this 4.1 million, the estimated undocumented is 400,000.
00:36The plan of the Republicans, and especially the newly elected President Donald Trump,
00:42is to have mass deportations of undocumented Filipinos.
00:50It means that undocumented Filipinos do not have security in their papers,
00:56they are overstaying tourists, they are not green card holders.
01:00And that's 400,000.
01:02So if that is a mass deportation, we should plan it like what I said yesterday.
01:08We still have a lot of things that we expect to happen, even though Donald Trump will be in office on January 20.
01:16Let's talk about this.
01:18Because the first effect is that immigration will be stricter.
01:24Our countrymen are waiting for their relatives to petition in America.
01:29It looks like it will be harder than now.
01:32What's more worrying here is that the Trump administration has plans,
01:38including the suspension of the so-called birthright citizenship.
01:44What is birthright citizenship?
01:46In America, if you were born there, even if your parents are not American, not citizens,
01:52if you were born there, you are a natural-born American.
01:57Just like my son.
01:59My wife and I are not American because she was born in Hawaii,
02:04and Hawaii is part of America, she is American.
02:07Natural born.
02:08But the Republicans are planning to revoke this,
02:14especially if they want to see if this should continue.
02:19So this will have an effect on our fellow Filipinos
02:24whose citizenship is not yet perfected in America,
02:28if their relative there is a child who is not a natural-born citizen.
02:33And what's more worrying is the so-called denaturalization.
02:37What does it mean?
02:38You know, denaturalization is a process where a foreigner becomes a citizen.
02:44And according to DATOS, there are a lot of Filipinos who are American citizens who are naturalized.
02:49Maybe you have relatives.
02:51These are Filipinos who became Americans long ago.
02:54In New York now, an estimated 62% of Filipinos there are naturalized.
03:00Now, denaturalization is the process that will reverse this.
03:04They will investigate how you became naturalized.
03:07Did you go through the right process?
03:09Or did you just pay for your marriage?
03:11And especially if you committed a crime,
03:14you can be revoked or removed from citizenship because you are naturalized.
03:22So how about Filipinos who are no longer Filipino citizens?
03:26Because they no longer acquire Filipino citizenship,
03:30or they no longer retain Filipino citizenship.
03:32They are not dual.
03:33They will become stateless.
03:35Because they are no longer Filipino,
03:37and they will no longer be American.
03:40This is not happening yet, but we should be talking about it.
03:43We should be preparing.
03:45President-elect Trump will sit down on January 20.
03:50But maybe if we think about it,
03:51maybe it's time for us to go through diplomacy.
03:54For example, President Marcos can talk now,
03:58diplomatically,
03:59to the new president
04:02so we can see how our fellow Filipinos won't be affected by this policy.
04:09That is my point of view this morning.
04:11Back to you in the studio, Dayan.
04:13Again, good morning and thank you very much.
04:16And thank you very much also, Professor Antonio Contreras.
