00:00Hi, I'm health reporter Sarah McCann. The UK Government have introduced a smoking ban as part
00:06of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill. The reforms aim to phase out smoking and create the first smoke-free
00:13generation. Under the proposals in England, the indoor smoking ban will extend to outdoor spaces,
00:20including outside hospitals, outside schools and within children's playgrounds.
00:27In August, there had been suggestions of extending the indoor smoking ban to outdoor
00:33hospitality settings such as beer gardens. However, this has not been mentioned in the
00:38current proposal. As well as outlining measures to create the first smoke-free generation,
00:45this bill sits alongside a ban on vape advertising and sponsorship, while disposable vapes will be
00:52banned from June 1st 2025 under separate environmental legislation. In the UK,
00:59smoking is responsible for around 80,000 deaths every year, with tobacco responsible for one in
01:06four cancer deaths.
