00:00Hi, my name is Nick Drane. I'm a PGA professional and Master Fitting Specialist here at the
00:08Titleist Performance Centre at Woburn. In this video, we're going to talk about how
00:13to hit your fairway wood off the ground.
00:19One of the most common mistakes I see golfers make when they try to hit a fairway wood off
00:23the ground is that they try and lift the golf ball into the air. So from a good setup position,
00:29I see that their weight transfer works back to their trail side and they're trying to
00:34lift it in the air, catching it either in the bottom of the club or at the top of it
00:39and miss hitting it.
00:44In order to hit your three wood off the ground successfully, we need to do the opposite.
00:48So what I'd like to see is from a good setup position, is that as you come into impact,
00:55you've actually got your weight transferring through towards your target and what you'll
00:59see what some of the best players in the world do is a lot of them even actually take a small
01:03divot with their fairway wood, which implies that they're actually hitting down through
01:06the golf ball, much like how you'd hit an iron.
01:09By having the proper weight transfer, you're also going to present the entire club face
01:14to the golf ball, hitting it out of the sweet spot. Okay, so it might feel like you're taking
01:19loft off the golf club in this sense, but what you're doing is you're actually presenting
01:23the entire face of the golf ball, getting better contact and more distance and more
01:27consistency.
01:29The other important element to consider, we're all individual golfers with individual speeds,
01:34golf swings, how we deliver the golf club. The important thing to do, see a PGA professional,
01:38get properly fitted for a three wood. Traditionally, a three wood has been 15 degrees in loft,
01:43but for some golfers, they might need more loft initially. So you might find that you
01:47actually hit something like 16 and a half or an 18 degree fairway wood further and better
01:54than a 15 degree three wood.
