Negative ang madalas naiisip ng ilan pag pinag-usapan ang radiation. Pero maraming praktikal na gamit 'yan at kabilang sa pinag-aaralan ay ang tulong niyan sa recycling. Tara, let's change the game!

00:00Negative is what some people think when they talk about radiation, but there are a lot of practical uses for it, and in addition to studying, it also helps in recycling.
00:20Come on, let's change the game!
00:22Radiation is often heard as the origin story of comic book superheroes.
00:37But of course, it's just fiction. Because of radiation tech, there are a lot of uses for it. It can also help in plastic recycling. Let's go!
00:45The DOST Philippine Nuclear Research Institute studies the use of post-radiation extrusion for plastic recycling.
00:53Led by Dr. Jordan Madrid and in partnership with DOST ITBI and EnviroTech Waste Recycling, they aim to use radiation tech to improve compatibility and make the recycled material stronger from plastic waste.
01:09The products made from recycled plastics from plastic waste are weaker compared to the products made from virgin plastics.
01:18This is where the idea of not using radiation technology as a green and efficient technology came from.
01:26Radiation can break down and destroy the molecular components of plastics.
01:32Chemical reactions can be done without chemical initiators and without high temperatures.
01:44We got a special look at the Electron Beam Irradiation Facility to see how recycled plastic pellets are irradiated.
01:53We are lucky because we were also able to see the accelerator vessel where the electron beam is produced.
02:02When it reaches the bottom, that's where the radiation is irradiated.
02:07When it comes to recycling, it's not just about combining plastics because their composition is different.
02:13And to combine them effectively, we will pass them through electron beam irradiation.
02:19The electron beam we are using is a type of ionizing radiation.
02:23It will change the chemical structure of the polymer.
02:30After 7 minutes, the process is done.
02:33It looks the same, but the molecular structure has changed.
02:38This is what we will dissolve and combine with other plastic wastes to make new materials.
02:46Like plastic tiles, lumber, and plastic bricks.
02:50It's beneficial because we can recycle more combinations of plastics.
02:59Mga Kapuso, one way to use radiation technology this time to solve our plastic waste problems.
03:06For GMA Integrated News, I'm Martin Avier, changing the game!
