The New South Wales Police Force is set to get a huge pay rise. The Police union is encouraging members to accept the offer which would result in some officers receiving an almost $50,000 more per-year. But the state government is still in pay negotiations with nurses and public transport workers who are preparing for strike action this week.

00:00Duncan, it's us.
00:04Kicking off the week with a story.
00:06The State Government delivering good news in two sectors.
00:09For police, a historic pay bump of up to 40% over four years.
00:15The deal could mean an extra $47,000 a year for some officers.
00:20It represents the most significant pay deal in over 30 years of policing and it really
00:25does have generational change for our police officers.
00:28We inherited more than 1,000 police short when we came into government and unfortunately
00:34we are still bleeding police in this state.
00:37The government says the entire pay boost will be funded by savings from within the policing
00:42budget including bringing workers' compensation in-house.
00:46It was the external company that was clipping the ticket along the way and we've been able
00:51to bring that in-house and save those dollars.
00:54In education, a report shows a significant increase in the availability of relief teachers.
01:00Let me be clear, we have regained half a million hours of learning for our children in 12 months.
01:09While the government's celebrating improvements for some workers, the health and transport
01:14sectors are gearing up for industrial action over pay.
01:17Nurses and midwives are set to walk off the job on Wednesday and rail, bus and tram workers
01:22are threatening to suspend services on Thursday.
01:26It's unacceptable because we know that without a proper pay increase we will continue to
01:30lose nurses and midwives to other states and our health system will suffer for that.
01:36The opposition says the government is not doing enough to dissuade the disruptions.
01:41This is a weak government that will not stand up to the unions and the consequence of that
01:45is industrial chaos in New South Wales.
01:48Some of the government's critics will say, well, this is ongoing and endless.
01:52We've worked really hard over 18 months and for big workforces in our public sector we've
01:56come to good agreements.
02:00Trying to maintain classroom decorum as negotiations continue.
