Woman charged with cheating man over investment in "Paddy Jewellery"

A woman pleaded not guilty in the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate's Court on Tuesday (Nov 12) to cheating a government pensioner of more than RM26,000 in a non-existent 'Paddy Jewellery' gold investment last May. 00:13Hajartul Haini Abdul Hamid made the plea before Magistrate S Mageswari. She was accused of

00:19cheating Mohammed Zayed Ibrahim by deceiving him into investing in the paddy jewellery

00:24gold investment. This prompted the man to deposit 26,750 ringgit into a CIMB bank account

00:33belonging to Pawana Suite, a company owned by the woman, which he would not have done

00:38if he knew the investment did not exist. The offence was allegedly committed at a bank

00:43in Jalan Rajah Muda Abdul Aziz at 12.20pm on May 2nd this year. The charge, framed under

00:51Section 420 of the Penal Code, provides imprisonment for up to 10 years with whipping and is liable

00:57to a fine if convicted. The Magistrate allowed bail of 3,000 ringgit with one surety and

01:05set December 20th for mention and appointment of a lawyer. Earlier media reports revealed

01:11that police had received 69 complaints related to the PA jewellery and paddy jewellery gold

01:17investment scams, with losses amounting to 48.5 million ringgit. Investigations revealed

01:24that the scheme offered five investment packages with returns based on current gold prices.

01:31Police have urged those who may have fallen victim to the scam to step forward and lodge

01:36a report at the nearest police station.
