15:12wants the UAE-Pakistan friendship to move forward like a family in the Pakistani economy and trade.
15:20We are with you day and night for all kinds of facilities.
15:24The UAE is an example for all of us.
15:27When the leadership wanted to work hard and build buildings from the desert,
15:35the UAE has done it.
15:38Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif Baku is addressing the conference.
15:41The year of glacial preservation should send a message loud and clear
15:50for a call to action for mitigating glaciers, not migrating glaciers,
15:58protecting vital ecosystems and securing sustainable water resources for the future.
16:08I say this with fullest authority at my command
16:15because Pakistan is home to the largest number of glaciers outside the polar region
16:24and we naturally have a very high stake in preventing the loss of such vital resources.
16:36Ladies and gentlemen, glaciers are lifelines for millions of people across the world
16:45as they hold approximately 70% of the world's fresh water
16:53and are critical for global climate stability and water security.
17:00Pakistan is home to over 7,000 glaciers,
17:07which provide approximately 60 to 80% of the Indus River's flow,
17:16supporting around 90% of Pakistan's agriculture
17:23and serving more than 200 million people.
17:29However, the glaciers that feed this river have been shrinking over a period of time
17:40and at an alarming rate, which is estimated close to 23% decrease since 1960.
17:52This retreat is driven by rising temperatures
18:08and the consequences of these changes are already glaringly visible.
18:17Accelerated glacier melt has led to the formation of more than 3,000 glacial lakes
18:25in the northern part of Pakistan.
18:28Beautiful though, but at the same time posing great threat.
18:36And it is estimated that out of these, 33 are at high risk of outburst flooding,
18:47putting at risk the lives of over 7 million people.
18:53Ladies and gentlemen, this is a very grave situation
19:00and demands urgent action.
19:03And now, the Glaciers 2025 initiative provides a unique opportunity
19:13to focus global attention on this crisis
19:19and to drive coordinated efforts needed to prevent further glacier melt.
19:28Therefore, as I said just a while ago, we must act and act now,
19:34not only for these glaciers, but for the survival of the people and communities
19:42that depend on them in various parts of the world.
19:47Excellencies, I would therefore like to emphasize
19:53that regional collaboration is key to many of the actions needed
19:59to keep these life sources from pollution and snow melt.
20:06The science of data sharing and standardized glacial monitoring
20:12for strengthening the ability of countries to track glacier health
20:18and develop strategies for sustainable water usage is extremely critical.
20:25As one of the most affected countries, Pakistan requires enhanced support
20:34to implement glacial monitoring programs, early warning systems,
20:40adopt climate resilient agriculture practices,
20:45and invest in alternative water storage solutions.
20:51Ladies and gentlemen, Pakistan stands ready to work with the international community
21:02to protect these invaluable natural resources.
21:06We call on all those countries to unite in this effort,
21:12taking concrete and decisive action to secure the future of glaciers
21:19as well as protect mankind, the people who depend on them,
21:28and the health of our planet.
21:31Excellencies, let this be our legacy,
21:36a planet where glaciers thrive and humanity flourishes.
21:42Thank you very much.
