All ACT public primary schools will get grants to purchase evidence-backed reading books and numeracy resources as part of a system-wide overhaul of how children are taught basic skills.

00:21Today's announcement is $700,000 that will go to, in grants to each school,
00:26from between $5,000 and $19,000 depending on the size of the school,
00:31for children in Kindergarten and Year 2, so the schools can buy decodable readers.
00:36This is a really important tool to be used as part of implementation of strong
00:40foundations in literacy and numeracy across our school system.
00:44If schools already have decodable readers,
00:46then they'll be able to use that funding to purchase numeracy supports,
00:50which is another part of phasing in our program of works across ACT schools,
00:55strengthening our literacy and numeracy approach across the whole system.
00:59So you saw a Kindergarten lesson today with an explicit instruction lesson
01:04around phonics that was being delivered by one of our teachers.
01:08Now the teacher in there would be classed as a new educator,
01:12but by having really strong phonics training,
01:17a really great way of engaging the students,
01:20you saw that the kids were doing really well on this morning,
01:23and you could see from what they were doing and what they were saying
01:25that they had a really good idea of what they were doing,
01:28and hopefully their learning was progressing day by day.
01:31And I guess the new funding package that the Minister has announced today
01:35will just be able to further enhance the resources that we have,
01:39and look, if we can continue to refine the craft of the teachers
01:43to particularly teach the students in a way that is better than yesterday,
01:50we'll only enhance the learning.
