00:00Coming up in our weekly football show a look at both Merseyside clubs as
00:06Liverpool are flying on top of the Premier League pile and Everton are
00:10struggling in the goal-getting department. Also a look in the
00:14Championship at Leeds United as they continue to fight for promotion. All
00:19this and more to come.
00:24So Will, looking at Liverpool's fixtures obviously we mentioned this tough run
00:29and they've come through with sort of flying colours. How do you sort of
00:32reflect on it? How are fans feeling about it? You know the gap that they've got at
00:37the top of the Premier League is starting to just get wider with Manchester City
00:41and Arsenal making a few errors as well. Yeah I think everyone has made a point
00:48that Liverpool's fixture list from the last international break to the one
00:53that's upon us now was very difficult. You know when Liverpool had this start
00:58to the season under Arnaud Slotts they were just trying to say well they haven't played
01:02anyone yet and to be fair to Arnaud Slotts as well he said it a couple of times
01:05in his press conference that a lot of the teams that that he plays with were
01:10down the bottom end of the table. But from the last international
01:16break to this one they've played Chelsea, they've beaten them, they've beaten the German
01:21champions Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig who were flying in the
01:26Bundesliga, Brighton twice you know you've seen what Brighton did to Manchester City
01:30at the weekend and they've beaten Aston Villa as well fairly comfortably at
01:34Anfield and the only point that they have dropped was a 2-2 draw at Arsenal
01:39which I don't think that's a bad result at all is it? Drawing away your title
01:43rivals when you probably weren't your best half especially in the
01:47first half of that game. So they've got some tricky fixtures after the next
01:52international break, Manchester City, Newcastle to come and the Merseyside
01:56derby but Liverpool have certainly shown that they can compete with any team in
02:03the Premier League, any team in Europe. I think they will have a wobble at one
02:08stage a little bit. It always happens to any team, maybe where they can't pick up
02:18wins for a couple of weeks but it's about how Liverpool can quickly bounce
02:22back after that and what Arnold Slotkin can do but Liverpool fans are
02:27going into every game now believing that they can win it especially
02:30when they're going to be playing Real Madrid and Manchester City when the
02:33season recommences after the international break.
02:36Well also on that, six goals conceded, by far the least goals
02:42conceded in the league as well. This is something that must be really charging
02:46that they're sort of fluent at attack and obviously we mentioned it's a bit
02:50more of a steady approach under Arnie Schlott. It's all sort of coming
02:54together and it seems at the right time. I know it's obviously early on but the
02:58fans must be so excited. Yeah they are, I mean there's a perfect balance really.
03:03Maybe in January they might look to adjust in the field, obviously they wanted
03:07Super Mendy in the summer and did he still want to add to the engine room
03:13but overall it's a real good mix and I think that's why confidence is growing
03:19among supporters.
03:23Well looking at Everton and obviously we've spoken about the sort of
03:28conundrum that Sean Dyche faced in terms of the attacking department. What
03:34could he sort of do to change it? There seems to be a bit of lack of potency up
03:37front whether it's Calot Lu in Beto, you know obviously McNeil's had a few good
03:41games so far but what sort of needs to change to unlock that going forward
03:47and scoring more goals? Yeah it was pretty toothless, nil-nil draw
03:53against West Ham, not too many guilt-edged chances. They did have a
03:59couple of chances at Southampton the week before but are Everton
04:03consistently carving out enough goalscoring opportunities to win games?
04:09Especially when you think back to that Fulham one as well before, probably not
04:12and as you say supporters do want to see a bit of a change and I
04:18think that the one that they're calling for is moving Ilhan Mendy into the
04:22number 10 role. He's been really good since he arrived from Marseille in
04:28the summer, mainly played out on the left wing. Supporters want to see him playing
04:33off the striker. I asked Sean Dyche about it last week at his press conference and
04:37he suggested that to play in the number 10 role it's not just about Roman free in
04:45the opposition half, he needs to do the defensive duties as well and maybe
04:49Dyche hasn't got that trust from Dyche yet in terms of on the back foot. I mean
04:55there's an argument to make that if you play him in the 10 then you'd be
05:00more on the front foot. Nathan Paterson in on the right-hand side, maybe move
05:04Ashley Young to the left because Vitaly Mikhalenko, he's a good
05:10defensive full-back but it doesn't offer you an awful lot going forward and
05:15ultimately Sean Dyche has been without two strikers since the start of the season.
05:19Yousef Chimiti who has a good preseason to be fair to him, he had foot surgery
05:25just before the campaign started and then Armando Brogia was brought in and
05:31he hasn't played a game so far just because he arrived with an Achilles
05:35issue, he's back in training at the minute, Everton are gonna start
05:39stepping things up I think in the international break but it'll be
05:43a few weeks in the under-21s you're thinking, he's probably played twice
05:49at a minimum there so Everton are gonna be waiting for him to get fit and I
05:55think to be honest if you're Dominic Calvert-Lewin you may be looking and thinking
05:58I haven't had any supply line here whatsoever, he's missed a couple of
06:02chances this season, one-on-ones, but in recent weeks they haven't really been
06:06giving him the service so how's Everton improve the service for the strikers so
06:11definitely a lot of things to think about for Sean Dyche because he did say
06:15after West Ham that Everton are lacking a little bit of devilment, well
06:18ultimately it's up to the managers to remedy that.
06:22Leeds have scored a lot of goals this season and they've had a lot of different
06:26goal scorers, you've had Joel Perrault, you've had Mateo Joseph both playing
06:31through the middle for Leeds and if we look at that sort of that debate and in
06:35particular on Joel Perrault who himself has got six goals this season
06:39which is pretty high in the championship so far, who's preferred do you
06:44think Ellen Drode at the moment because you know we start the season with Joseph
06:49because we spoke a lot last season about how Perrault never really has hit the
06:52heights people perhaps have expected him at Leeds until this season when
06:56actually you start putting the ball in the back of the net so what's
06:59the feeling there, who should be starting games? It's a hard one to weigh up this
07:03because obviously a lot of Perrault's goals have been off the bench and he's sort of
07:06wanting to sort of have that impact from the start really and he's definitely
07:09got it in his locker to do that I mean but the stats I mean if you look at the
07:11stats, Perrault's played 674 minutes of championship football and he's got six
07:15goals and two assists and Mateo Joseph's played 830 minutes obviously you know
07:19like what you know 160 minutes more there or thereabouts he's got two goals
07:23and three assists so in terms of like you know goals to goals to minutes ratio
07:26like Perrault's way ahead obviously and I don't think there's any doubt that he's
07:30the best finisher at the club you know so at the end of the day you know it's
07:32goals you need to win games and we've just talked about obviously Leeds not
07:35scoring enough goals in terms of like putting games to bed so Perrault's the answer
07:39really on that score at the moment I think I mean that said Mateo Joseph's a
07:42very very good player obviously I mean you're just wanting to get a real run of
07:46goals for Leeds that's the thing and we've seen it do it for Spain's 21s you
07:49know I mean like he's on a phenomenal run for them and there's no doubt on how
07:52good a player he is and stuff and I've always thought an awful lot of him and
07:55I'm you know so pleased when he finally got his chance and stuff this season at
07:58the start of it and it's not like he's let anybody down or anything like that
08:00he's you know I think everybody you know rates him very very highly I mean all
08:04the fans do Daniel Farke does I mean we all do and it's a fantastic player but
08:08just probably wants to score a few more goals obviously but that's you know it's
08:11not just about that for strikers but you know yeah I mean at the moment you're
08:14right I mean with Peru you almost forget how many he's got I mean six goals I
08:17think that puts him joint fourth in the championship top scorer charts and
08:21that's a pretty decent return really when you haven't even started that many
08:24games and he's had seven league starts compared to Joseph who's had nine so you
08:28know I guess he's in pole position at the moment that said obviously didn't
08:31start the weekend and stuff so it's almost like you know one then the other
08:34and it is you know obviously it's a squad game especially in December as we
08:37say with these games when these games are going to be coming up in December I suppose the way to
08:41summarize it is you probably just want Peru to be able to do that more from the
08:45start whereas Joseph obviously all-round game yeah fantastic and stuff
08:48but you want him to be like just getting a few more goals and stuff so there's
08:51probably like sort of like little things for him both to be sort of like you know
08:54to answer I suppose but it's a good debate to have to have both those
08:57players shouldn't forget Bamford as well obviously Daniel Farke always extremely
09:01complimentary about Patrick Bamford and he's still very much in the mix and stuff
09:04so another option there but it's not just the forwards as well it's the
09:07wingers as well that's the thing I mean obviously leads aren't helped at the
09:10moment by Largi Ramazzani being out injured hopefully that one's not too
09:14serious you know it shouldn't be too long hopefully before he's back and I
09:17think probably he's already emerging as like one of the star players if not like
09:20the star player really
09:23How does that feel?
09:25Relieved
09:27After about how many months is it? 7, 8 months?
09:29Yeah
09:31How does that feel?
09:33A big relief after the first win of the season
09:35It's took a long time
09:37Probably we haven't played the best today
09:39and got three points
09:41Nice to see Ruben Neves back here as well
09:44Amazing memories
09:46It's the passion for the club
09:48You know what I mean
09:50When the fans chanted his name
09:52They chanted Nuno
09:54You know
09:56Happy days
09:58Hopefully we can get a couple of wins now
10:00on the back of that
10:02Yeah exactly
10:04They needed an early goal and they got it
10:06Pablo Sarabia kept his place in the side
10:08A lot of fans weren't particularly happy
10:10but finally delivered didn't he?
10:12I'm not a massive fan of Sarabia
10:14but he took his goal very well
10:16Fair play to O'Neill keeping him in the side
10:18Absolutely
10:20And the beautiful irony I guess
10:22is Mateus Cunha scoring outside the box
10:24in front of Neves
10:26Yeah
10:28And Cunha
10:30Oh mate
10:32Where would we be without him
10:34He's the talisman of this team
10:36Without Cunha
10:38I think even now
10:41In front of Ruben Neves as well
10:43Great to have him back
10:45Always great to have him back
10:47Some great memories
10:49I was in the safe bank for that goal
10:51against Derby
10:53He just scored world class goals
10:55Of course it took a stunner
10:57for Mateus Cunha
10:59outside the box
11:01in front of Ruben Neves
11:03I know
11:05It's unusual for us to score a couple of goals
11:07at home
11:10I don't know
11:12I hope so
11:14Hopefully now
11:16the win today
11:18pushes them on
11:20If it was up to me
11:22O'Neill would already be gone
11:24Hopefully that now gives them
11:26the push they need
11:28to get a few wins on the bench
11:30I still think they need
11:322-3 wins out the next 4 games
11:34Get them going
11:36and then hopefully we'll see how we go
11:39Do you feel they'll be OK this season?
11:41Still a long way to go
11:43It's a good run of fixtures
11:45Hopefully we can pick up some good points
11:47The pressure was on Gary O'Neill
11:49Do you still feel he's the right man to stay?
11:51I can't think of anybody better at the minute
