People are gathering in Lima to protest crime, extortion and government inaction. The protesters are hitting the streets during this year's APEC forum to bring international attention to Peru's domestic issues.

00:00Police are out in force here in the streets of Lima as protests and strikes begin deliberately
00:07coinciding with APEC 2024 hosted here in Peru, where world leaders will come together for
00:14one of the world's biggest international economic forums.
00:24Protesters have gathered here in central Lima near the country's Congress, angry with a
00:27rise in organised crime and extortion attacks across Peru.
00:52Peruvian leaders anticipated these protests, deploying thousands of police across the city
00:57and closing roads.
00:58A spokesperson for the president even referring to the potential protesters as traitors to
01:03the country.
01:22Strikes and protests are expected to continue throughout the week and possibly grow in size
01:26and move closer to the venues hosting this year's APEC forum, where at the end of the
01:31summit world leaders will gather to release a joint declaration.
