00:00Temperatures have been dropping across the UK, but thinking ahead and preparing for the cold snap can make a real difference.
00:08This is how you can stay safe during the cold months this winter.
00:13Cold weather can have a real impact on our health, from illnesses such as the cold and flu, to physical injuries caused by trips, slips and falls.
00:23For older people, the colder weather can increase the risk of heart attack, strokes, pneumonia, arthritis-related pain and accidents in the home.
00:31As we age, our bodies don't realise how cold they are and can take a longer time to warm up.
00:38It's important to stay warm during the winter months to help prevent any illnesses or accidents.
00:45If going outside, make sure that you wear plenty of layers.
00:50In your home, make sure that it's heated to the recommended 18°C to help keep you warm.
00:56Don't open your bedroom window during the night as breathing in cold air can increase the risk of chest infections.
01:04Eat regularly throughout the day, including one hot meal, and also drink regularly warm drinks.
01:11Look out for vulnerable friends and family and neighbours, and if you have any concerns about your health or the health of others, contact emergency services.
01:21You can find information about updates on weather forecasts and any weather warnings in your local area at the Met Office.
