Birmingham City Council is proposing to reduce speed limits on major roads across the city. The move follows a declaration of a "road safety emergency" after a series of fatal accidents. We'll explain the details and look at the reaction to the public consultation now underway.
Transcript
00:00Birmingham City Council has launched a public consultation on reducing the speed limits
00:05from 40mph to 30mph on 25 major roads across the city. The council declared a road safety
00:12emergency earlier this year, following calls from campaigners and a series of accidents
00:17that raise concerns about the dangers posed by higher speed limits. A similar consultation
00:22last year found that over half of respondents opposed to changes, but many cited concerns
00:28about enforcement rather than the principle of lowering speeds. The council has decided
00:33to press forward with new plans, which will run until 10 December. Funding for the proposed
00:38changes, which are expected to be implemented in early 2025 if approved, will come from
00:43surplus income generated by the city's clean air zone. Public responses to the consultation
00:49can be submitted online, with officials urging the community to share their views on the
00:55proposed changes.
