Have you ever wondered why Indian cricket legends aren’t called Sir Sachin Tendulkar and Sir Rahul Dravid, like Sir Alastair Cook or Sir Don Bradman? Here's why: the British monarch bestows the title Sir for outstanding contributions in fields like sports, cinema, science, and philanthropy, but only to citizens of the UK or citizens of countries that recognise the British monarch as their king.
If Indian cricketers want this title, India will have to accept the British Monarch as their King. After 200 years of British rule, that’s not happening. Plus, Article 18 of the Indian Constitution forbids Indian citizens from accepting titles from a foreign government.
Fun fact: the only Indian cricketer ever knighted was Vijaya Ananda in 1936, but he renounced it in 1947 when India gained independence from the British.
