00:00After 14 years in prison and sentenced to death in Indonesia,

00:05Mary Jane Veloso will now be able to return to the Philippines.

00:08Let's go back to how the case of Veloso started in Indonesia.

00:13Veloso was arrested after the heroine saw his suitcase at Yogyakarta Airport in Indonesia in April 2010.

00:20Veloso explained that he had no knowledge of illegal drugs and that the suitcase came from his recruiter.

00:26In October of the same year, he was found guilty of drug trafficking and placed in death row.

00:32Subsequently, the government of the Philippines asked the former Indonesian President Joko Widodo

00:38to give Veloso a clemency and he was denied several times.

00:42Five years later, Veloso was found guilty of executing other drug convicts in Indonesia.

00:49But the firing squad of Veloso did not stop after President Noynoy Aquino was arrested in Indonesia.

00:57Next, the recruiter of Veloso, Christina Sergio, went to the police.

01:01Aquino said that Veloso will be a state witness against the syndicates that recruited him.

01:06Indonesia agreed to give Veloso an indefinite reprieve to give him a testimony against Sergio

01:13and his other recruiter, Julius Lakanilaw.

01:16At the end of Aquino's term and the appointment of President Rodrigo Duterte,

01:21the position of the Philippines changed in the case of Veloso.

01:25Duterte will not block Indonesia's decision according to their law.

01:30In 2022, when President Bongbong Marcos was appointed,

01:34Veloso's family asked for a clemency in Indonesia for Mary Jane.

01:40Aside from the clemency, the government did not stop the filing of the sentence against Veloso.

01:46In September, Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto visited the country

01:52and President Marcos was able to speak directly to the case of Veloso.

01:56After two months, President Marcos announced that Veloso could be transferred to a prison in the Philippines.
