00:00Looking for a bargain on beef? Texas Roadhouse is the place to go for a decent sirloin,
00:05but how does it compare to the chain's New York Strip?
00:08Some things to keep in mind before we dig in. Both the sirloin and the New York Strip were
00:12sampled via carryout, so the texture and presentation may differ from what you might
00:16experience when dining in. Also note that prices and availability are subject to change over time
00:21and may vary between Texas Roadhouse locations. Now, let's begin with sides. The sirloin steak
00:27comes with your choice of two sides and does not include a drink. In addition to their famous rolls,
00:32there are many Texas Roadhouse sides available. Options include mashed potatoes with gravy,
00:36corn, steamed vegetables, baked potatoes, salad, and more — or macaroni and cheese
00:41for an upcharge. We chose to pair our sirloin with fries and a salad.
00:45Meanwhile, the New York Strip steak also comes with your choice of two sides,
00:48and for this dish, we opted for the mashed potatoes and rice. Sure,
00:51it's an odd combination, but aside from the macaroni and cheese,
00:54there's no upcharge for sides, so you're free to choose whatever combo suits you best.
00:59Our made-from-scratch sides are really heaping."
01:02As far as the sizes of the steaks, there were several options for the sirloin,
01:06ranging from 6- to 16-ounce cuts. In comparison to similar chains like Outback or Logan's,
01:11the 16-ounce option offered by Texas Roadhouse is by far the biggest,
01:15with the other competitors topping out at 11 ounces. Meanwhile, the sizes for the New York
01:19Strip are limited to an 8-ounce thick cut and a 12-ounce traditional cut.
01:23We went with the 8-ounce option for both the sirloin and the strip.
01:27For an 8-ounce sirloin steak, the price came out to a respectable $15.99.
01:32Comparing Texas Roadhouse's sirloin price to Outback Steakhouse's,
01:35it's important to note that Outback only offered a center-cut sirloin at the time.
01:40Still, even for a 6-ounce center-cut steak at Outback, you'd find yourself paying $16.79.
01:45Meanwhile, our 8-ounce New York Strip steak cost $17.49.
01:49Comparing the prices this time with Logan's Roadhouse, which only offers a 12-ounce cut,
01:54Texas Roadhouse again comes in cheaper, with their own 12-ounce coming in at $21.99
01:59compared to Logan's $28.16. Once again, pricing is subject to change depending on where you live,
02:05but one thing's for sure — while the Texas Roadhouse sirloin is cheaper than its strip,
02:09both steaks beat out their respective competitors.
02:12Comparing the sirloin to the New York Strip,
02:15based on information from Texas Roadhouse's website,
02:17the New York Strip is clearly the fattier and more caloric choice. It also has a great deal
02:22of cholesterol. While the cholesterol in the sirloin steak makes up for 57 percent of your
02:26daily value, the cholesterol in this New York Strip makes up 112 percent.
02:32My cholesterol is terrible."
02:35Meanwhile, even though the sirloin is a lean cut of meat, it's surprising just how low the fat is.
02:40It clocked in with 8 grams of fat, 3 grams of saturated fat, and 0 grams of trans fat.
02:45All in all, while the New York Strip is indeed a popular steak cut,
02:49those who are looking to lower their cholesterol levels may wish to avoid
02:52eating this particular offering too frequently. Still, the New York Strip remains a reasonable
02:57pick for a healthier steak cut. Though not as low in fat and calories as the sirloin,
03:01it still isn't the worst when compared to other cuts of steak.
03:05Sirloin steak comes from an area of the cow where the muscles are used often,
03:09which means it isn't known for exceptional tenderness. It also tends to be among the
03:13cheaper steak options on steakhouse menus, if not the cheapest, as is the case at Texas Roadhouse.
03:19Even so, it's worth noting that despite being an inexpensive cut,
03:22it is still hailed for its deliciously beefy flavor. Our sirloin steak had visible grill
03:27marks and appeared larger in terms of surface area than the New York Strip,
03:30despite the fact that both steaks are 8 ounces.
03:33New York Strip is generally known for its tenderness and is great to cook for special
03:37occasions. Ours looked super thick, as promised, almost like a larger-sized filet mignon.
03:43It also had a lot of char on it. The grill marks were out of control. They were thick and dark and
03:48took up the entire surface of the steak. And while the sirloin steak also featured grill marks,
03:52they weren't nearly as prominent.
03:54While most people seem to defer to higher-end cuts like New York Strip,
03:58we're happy to report that the sirloin steak at Texas Roadhouse is delicious.
04:02The sirloin was full of flavor and needed no steak sauce. With that said,
04:06there are a few things to note. The first is that despite the grill marks in the meat,
04:09there isn't a lot of charred flavor, which actually allowed the meat's distinct flavor
04:13to shine through. As expected, the sirloin wasn't very tender, but it also wasn't tough and chewy.
04:18Instead, it had a nice, firm bite. Overall, the sirloin steak is a great-tasting and
04:23affordable option for a steak dinner. The New York Strip, on the other hand,
04:26was incredibly tender, but in this case, that charred essence was a bit overpowering.
04:31And though the meat wasn't burnt, it was almost as though all flavor was from the char.
04:35That doesn't mean the New York Strip isn't worth ordering. It's a delicious,
04:38well-executed cut of meat, especially if you love char-grilled flavor.
04:43The sirloin steak and New York Strip at Texas Roadhouse are nothing alike,
04:47and there are pluses and minuses to both. The sirloin, for example,
04:50was full of flavor, while the New York Strip was incredibly tender. Still,
04:54the strip featured so much char that its flavor was almost disagreeable — emphasis on almost.
04:59Both the sirloin and New York Strip are of great value, and compared to other restaurants,
05:03Texas Roadhouse seems to strike the balance between quality and affordability quite well.
05:08Considering the flavor and texture of the steaks in addition to the delicious
05:11made-from-scratch sides, we felt that both meals were a bargain for the price paid.
