00:00Candace Cameron-Buray has said plenty of controversial things throughout her career,
00:05but these fashion choices made for a whole new kind of inappropriate statement.
00:09While Candace Cameron-Buray's faith does influence her fashion choices,
00:13she doesn't follow a strict dress code. For example, low necklines and shorts are very
00:19much a part of her wardrobe. She also doesn't have any hard and fast rules about what she wears.
00:24Instead, she goes with her gut and occasionally seeks a little advice.
00:28As she told Reumag in 2012,
00:31"'If I'm in doubt, I ask my husband, a friend, or my kids what they think.
00:36My boys, surprisingly, will always tell me if they think something is too revealing. I love that.'"
00:41Buray also receives unsolicited style opinions on social media.
00:45When she wore two different tiger prints to the Teen Choice Awards in 2019,
00:50some of her critics got really catty on Facebook. Buray wore a tied-up top,
00:55high-waisted shorts, and strappy heeled sandals that accentuated her toned legs.
01:00Just a hint of her stomach was visible, but she wore her top unbuttoned to display a fair
01:05amount of her chest. As one critic wrote,
01:08"'An open shirt that shows your boobs is not Christian dress.'"
01:11Another person observed that a single button was doing a dangerous amount of work, writing,
01:17"'I hope the button stays on her top.'"
01:19Buray also looked like she was trying hard to fit in with the event's younger attendees.
01:24If the blue carpet were an episode of Full House,
01:26Deej would learn a valuable lesson about always being true to herself.
01:30When Buray left the Hallmark Channel, she ignited a red-hot media firestorm when she
01:35told The Wall Street Journal her decision to move over to the Great American Family Network
01:40was due to their focus on, quote, "'traditional marriage.'"
01:44"'It's always been the most important thing personally to me, my faith in Jesus.'"
01:49In conservative speak, this means that she wasn't a fan of Hallmark becoming
01:53more inclusive by featuring stories centered on LGBTQ-plus couples. However,
01:59one unspoken, traditional marriage practice that Buray has chosen to ignore is the unwritten rule
02:05of steering clear of attire that might distract from the bride's dress as a wedding guest.
02:10In 2021, Buray posted an Instagram photo of her and her daughter pushing the boundaries
02:16of acceptable wedding fashion in vibrant scarlet gowns. As one fan reacted on Instagram,
02:21"'Wearing red to a wedding upstages the bride and puts all the attention on you.
02:26Granted you look fabulous, but it's the bride's day.'"
02:29Another commenter observed,
02:31"'Narcissism is found in Christians too.'"
02:34Evidently, the criticism didn't bother Buray. In 2024, she committed an arguably more egregious
02:40etiquette breach when she wore a gold dress to her son Lev Buray's wedding.
02:44Some of Candace's followers couldn't believe that she had risked outshining her new daughter-in-law
02:49by wearing something so shiny. One person chided,
02:52"'The gold dress is simply not appropriate attire for mother of the bride.'"
02:56In 2016, Buray dressed up in a Tinkerbell costume for a special Halloween episode of The View.
03:03She did a spot-on impression of Peter Pan's pixie pal, but some of her fans weren't feeling the
03:07Disney magic. Because of Halloween's roots in paganism and its association with witchcraft,
03:13in a Christian Post op-ed, one writer shared their stance on the spooky holiday, writing,
03:19"'A Christian celebrating Halloween would be like a Satan worshiper putting up a
03:22nativity scene at Christmas while singing, "'Happy Birthday, Jesus.'"
03:27Of course, not all Christians are opposed to celebrating the holiday.
03:30After Buray made it clear that she was among that contingent,
03:34her Facebook followers were more than happy to judge her. As one wrote,
03:38"'Not trying to be judgmental and I bet you got this a lot,
03:41but a Christian should not partake in celebration of Halloween.'"
03:45Another critic agreed, commenting,
03:47"'It blows me away how many Christians celebrate a day that is clearly of Satan.
03:51I don't care how you justify it. Christians should have no part of it.'"
03:55Others raised a stink about the design of Buray's sparkly tink costume,
04:00which featured a sweetheart neckline and short, layered skirt.
04:03One person hearkened back to Buray's remarks about dressing modestly on Dancing with the Stars.
04:09Their comment read,
04:10"'Confused!' You refuse to wear any skimpy costumes in Dancing with the Stars,
04:15yet you're posing in this skimpy costume."
04:19Buray shared an Instagram video of herself and her personal trainer
04:23doing push-ups while stacked on top of each other, head to ankle. However, some of Buray's fans took
04:29issue with the fact the two women were dressed in two-piece swimsuits for the lakeside workout.
04:34During the same workout sesh, the pair tested the integrity of their skimpy tops by doing
04:39headstands in them. As one Instagram user took note,
04:42"'Your nakedness is not for your husband,' according to the Bible."
04:46Buray has addressed this biblical principle in the past. Speaking with TooFab about why she
04:51didn't want to wear revealing outfits on Dancing with the Stars, she said,
04:56"'I want to reserve certain things for my husband.'"
04:59She also told Reumag that she values the opinion of her partner when it comes to how much skin she
05:04shows in public, saying,
05:06"'My husband too has a strong opinion about my clothing
05:09and will tell me if something is too much on the eyes from a man's perspective.'"
05:13In 2016, Buray's Instagram followers applauded her for wearing a shirt over her bikini
05:19in a group shot with some friends who did not have their swimsuits covered up.
05:23Perhaps her views on showing off her swimwear on social media
05:26evolved because she landed a partnership deal with Albion Fit.
05:30Since then, she's started promoting the brand's bikinis on Instagram.
05:35If Buray were still starring in Hallmark's Aurora Teagarden Mysteries series,
05:39perhaps she could use her sleuthing skills to solve the mystery of what
05:42happened to the rest of her 2024 Unsung Hero premiere dress.
05:46The top half of her stiff white dress was constructed from what appeared to be thick,
05:50jacquard fabric. Boning gave the garment some structure, but the dress looked far too big
05:55for its petite wearer. Mid-thigh, the skirt had an identity crisis and decided that it
06:01wanted to be a nightgown, becoming sheer before exploding into a thicket of floral lace that
06:06resembled an angel Christmas tree topper. Buray's style is so admired by her faithful fans
06:11that she penned a book titled Staying Stylish — Cultivating a Confident Look, Style, and Attitude.
06:18So it's odd that she made such a huge fashion misstep. At least some of her fans tried to
06:23heed Uncle Jesse's advice when they weighed in on the indecisive dress.
06:27"'Have mercy.'"
06:29As one Instagrammer wrote,
06:30"'I love everything about you but not the bottom of your dress. I'm sorry.'"
06:35Another admirer gushed,
06:36"'Not sure I understand the outfit choice but if you're happy I'm happy for you.'"
06:41So, while her look wasn't heaven sent,
06:43it's nice that there are some angels among her sometimes overly judgmental fans.
06:53you
