On November 24, 1892, the Philippines opened its first railway, the Manila Railway Company, with its first station in Tutuban, connecting to Dagupan, Pangasinan. In 1964, the Philippine National Railways (PNR) was created to expand its services. Several stations were built, including the famous Bicol Express, which connects Manila to various parts of the Bicol Region. However, years of negligence from past governments led to the decline of the railway system, with many stations abandoned or closed. In recent years, the government has made efforts to reopen and rehabilitate the PNR. In April 2024, the Calamba-Lucena stations were reopened.

The Philippines has a long history with railways and was one of the first countries in Southeast Asia to adopt this mode of transportation. It is ironic that, while the railway system was once well-developed and useful, modernizing it has become a challenge for our government in recent years.

In conclusion, using the Philippine National Railways (PNR) is essential to decongest traffic in Metro Manila and other parts of the country. By supporting PNR services, we can reduce road congestion, improve air quality, and create a more efficient transportation system, making the most of public investments for a better, more connected Philippines.
