00:00Leah Remini has filed a lawsuit against the Church of Scientology and its leader David
00:05Miscavige, accusing the religious organization of stalking, harassment, defamation, emotional
00:11distress, and more. Remini was a member of the institution for nearly four decades, starting
00:16at the age of nine, before she left in 2013 and became a vocal opponent of the organization,
00:21notably with her A&E docu-series Leah Remini, Scientology, and the Aftermath.
00:26The lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court outlines a pattern of
00:30coordinated and malicious assaults made against her after cutting ties with the Church,
00:34including claims that she was abusive to her mother and made racist remarks.
00:38Remini alleges that for ten years, she has been stalked, surveilled, harassed, threatened,
00:44intimidated, and was the victim of intentional malicious and fraudulent rumors via hundreds of
00:49Scientology-controlled and coordinated social media accounts. The suit also alleges that the
00:54Church of Scientology has harassed and threatened Remini's family members, friends, and colleagues,
00:59causing her to lose personal relationships and business opportunities. In a written statement,
01:04Remini said, quote, With this lawsuit, I hope to protect my right, as afforded by the Constitution
01:09of the United States, to speak the truth and report the facts about Scientology. I feel
01:14strongly that the banner of religious freedom does not give anyone license to intimidate,
01:18harass, and abuse those who exercise their First Amendment rights.
