“Sound of Freedom” has become an unlikely and controversial summer box office hit.
Transcript
00:00An anti-child sex-trafficking film has become one of the summer's most popular movies,
00:04grossing more than $50 million at the domestic box office, but it has come with its share
00:09of controversy.
00:10Sound of Freedom is based on the story of Tim Ballard, a former government agent whose
00:14investigative work focused on saving children from human trafficking.
00:17Ballard is played by Passion of the Christ actor Jim Caviezel, who has previously been
00:21accused of promoting right-wing QAnon conspiracy theories, and the film has particularly been
00:25embraced by right-wing figures such as Ben Shapiro, Jordan Peterson, and even former
00:30President Donald Trump, who previously was advised on trafficking issues by Ballard.
00:34In fact, Trump is scheduled to host a screening of Sound of Freedom at his New Jersey golf
00:37club next week, accompanied by Caviezel and Ballard.
00:40In addition, some critics have said the movie misrepresents the realities of child trafficking,
00:45calling it quote, paranoid, and a superhero movie for dads with brain worms.
00:49But the controversies don't end there.
00:50Most recently, some AMC moviegoers have accused the theater chain of deliberately sabotaging
00:54screenings of the film with broken air conditioners and low volume levels.
00:58AMC has denied these allegations, with CEO Adam Iran calling it quote, a conspiracy theory.
