Late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who was honored at this year's Met Gala, has long been criticized for making fatphobic and misogynistic comments ...

00:00It'll be okay for women to be fat in the future?
00:02I'm afraid yes.
00:03But not okay now?
00:05No.
00:16At the moment the Vogue is for very thin models.
00:18Do you feel that you have a responsibility to make the fashion different for slightly healthier models?
00:25I'm sorry to say that this is a subject that I consider on the ball of the ridiculous.
00:30For several reasons.
00:32The story with the anorexic girls, nobody works with anorexia.
00:35That has nothing to do with fashion.
00:37People who have that, they have problems with family and things like this.
00:41There are less than 1% of anorexic girls.
00:44But there are over in France, I don't know in England, over 30% of girls with big, big overweight.
00:50And it is much more dangerous and very bad for the health.
00:55So I think today, with the junk food in front of TV and things like this, it's something dangerous for the health of the girls.
01:02The models are skinny, but they're not that skinny.
01:05But they're borderline unhealthy when you look at the model in H&M campaign.
01:09All the new girls are not that skinny.
01:11You know, there's a new evolution.
01:13One of the most working girls today is Saskia.
01:17She's over 30.
01:18And she's a new model.
01:20There are lots of girls who are not only 15.
01:23I think that this kind of dialogue is something that will work in fashion.
01:26Look, if Twiggy would come today, everybody would say, too skinny, too this, too this.
01:31Twiggy was a girl.
01:33Everybody wanted to look like Twiggy.
01:35Every girl wanted to be skinny like Twiggy.
01:38Everybody wanted to have the makeup of Twiggy.
01:40So Kate Moss and Naomi, they started at 14, 15.
01:44They were nearly kids.
01:45So I can tell you all kinds of moral tales.
01:50But fashion and reality, it's vaguely different.
02:01I said, for such a beautiful girl, she was a little round.
02:04That's not the same thing.
02:05You know, this was totally misquoted.
02:08And in another interview in the English paper, I had said a few days before
02:12that she was a marvelous girl, that she was very gifted
02:15and beautiful enough to be a little round.
02:19A girl who is one day very inspiring can be less inspiring the next day,
02:23not because she's older, only because she doesn't follow fashion
02:26in a way women should follow fashion.
02:28Because fashion is the expression of our time.
02:30And it's always better to go ahead with your time than stay back.
02:33But when you design, are you designing for every woman?
02:37Nobody designs for every woman.
02:39Everybody designs for an idea of a woman, for what is, in fact,
02:44his or her personality of what's going on in fashion.
02:49And other women can identify with it, like it or not like it, buy it or not buy it.
