Transcript
00:00Something happens when we come together which is much greater than the individual part.
00:05We were able to find something that we love doing and communicate with the entire world.
00:21We're just in love with music and the music keeps us together, the music guides us, the music makes us do everything that we do.
00:30We both just started the 10th grade at Fairfax High School in Hollywood and we were almost immediately in love and at war.
00:55He and I grew up in a world where we did not have totally present parents and guides.
01:05Give it away, give it away, give it away now, give it away, give it away, give it away now, give it away, give it away, give it away now.
01:12I can't tell if I'm a kingpin or a puppet.
01:15There were crazy kids like us and we were all tossed out and drug addicted and traumatized and we came to Hollywood Boulevard and we found each other.
01:24Slovak had a band and needed a bass player. He said to Flea, you know, maybe you should learn to play the bass.
01:34We started off playing dive bars up and down the street and making a handful of people dance.
01:47Red Hot Chili Peppers, get up and jump.
01:54We play bone crunching mayhem folk. We play it hard and our motto is always play like you have a big dick.
02:04We were young men and we were living hard and very unschooled in the ways of life and we lost the heart and soul and the architect of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
02:35Once you know you can never go back, I gotta take it on the other side.
02:42So he came into the band in late 88 following the death of Hillel, which was already a hugely emotional loss, transition, discovery, who are we?
02:57It was really important to me when I joined the band to try to keep that same energy going that I remember feeling at their shows.
03:04Now that is a lie.
03:13I don't ever want to feel like I did that day. Take me to the place I love. Take me all the way.
03:25What that was referring to was a point in time about five years ago when I had nothing in my life. I had no friends or places to live or automobiles or relationships with my family.
03:38Any feelings that you can achieve on drugs you can achieve without them, believe me I know. Because I've been feeling them the last couple of years and I haven't touched drugs.
03:56I've been feeling them the last couple of years and I haven't touched drugs.
04:26Guys like Dave Navarro, Jack Sherman, Cliff Martinez, Jack Irons, the original drummer from the Chili Peppers, D.H. Pelligro, Blackbird McKnight, Josh Klinghoffer, all part of our journey.
04:40They really got their start in the sort of skate punk rock culture and the fact that they've come this far and now they're nominated for like three awards here, it's huge.
04:59We've been around for a pretty long time and it just seems like the longer we play people don't really turn off to us.
05:08I sat down with Flea and he's so passionate about music, even to this day doing it for so long, he's still so passionate about creating music and performing. I want to surround myself with guys like that forever.
05:20One more time for whatever reason the universe saw it fit to interject this band with another giant shot of plasma, which has happened so many times and never intentionally.
05:49And usually tragically and fortuitously at the same time.
