"I don't think influencers will exist." It made for a riveting conversation when India's most famous content creators shared the stage with Brut at #Cannes2023...

00:00Social media is moving towards more anonymity.
00:03I don't think influencers will exist.
00:05I started therapy thanks to the internet.
00:08I started getting scared of meeting people because they would say things like
00:11Oh, are you upset?
00:13You look different.
00:14Oh, you're so skinny in real life, huh?
00:19What about the views and the comments section?
00:24Sometimes it hurts.
00:26Sometimes there's a lot of love out there.
00:28How do you take a lot of the negative comments that come in?
00:32Do you listen to them?
00:33Do you don't listen to them?
00:34What's your process?
00:35Everyone is going to like me.
00:37It's okay.
00:38I'm not there to make everybody happy.
00:42Some people are not going to like your content.
00:45It's okay.
00:46I'm okay with the fact that not everybody is going to be like
00:49I love Ruhi Dosan.
00:50It's fine.
00:51It doesn't bother me a lot.
00:53I'm a very positive person.
00:55I chill.
00:56I joke around.
00:57I share it with my friends if I need it.
00:59And usually after a certain point, if I post something,
01:02I go through the comments.
01:03And then after that, I'm not going to look back into it.
01:06I feel like when it comes to negativity,
01:09I learn how to deal with it rather than ignoring it or piling it up.
01:14And my main therapy is just talking about my mother.
01:18She's there for me 24-7.
01:20I know I have a strong circle of best friends since childhood.
01:24You know that you will have a bad day.
01:26It's not like, oh, yeah, I'm happy.
01:27We're lucky.
01:28Nothing's going to bother me.
01:29No.
01:30I do have bad days.
01:31Certain things do bother me.
01:32But I just deal with it.
01:33And then I move on.
01:34Because you can't be sitting and crying about it.
01:37Because, again, like Ruhi said, they're just writing it.
01:40They're just commenting.
01:42What are they doing?
01:43And I'm like, actually, you're here for a reason.
01:45And my mom goes through every single comment, by the way.
01:49She's like, bacha, why are you writing ufo cringe and all?
01:53I'm like, it's okay.
01:54Chill out.
01:55And then she starts in Punjabi.
01:56I'm like, it's okay.
01:57Chill out.
01:58I'm like, mom, it's okay.
01:59Relax.
02:00So, yeah, like I said, she's my therapy.
02:02I'm, I think, the biggest crybaby I know.
02:06I'm so sensitive.
02:08The smallest thing.
02:09Like, I could say hi to you.
02:10And then if you didn't wave back with the same energy that I gave you,
02:13I would be overthinking it for the next week.
02:16What did I do wrong?
02:17Why does she hate me?
02:18I'm 25 now.
02:19So for over a decade, I've almost been on the internet.
02:22Now I can say my skin is fine.
02:24Because I've read every possible hate comment you've ever tried about me.
02:28It's the same stuff.
02:30What is one of the worst comments that you've got?
02:33I don't think, at this point, I don't think there's any, like, worst thing.
02:36The same generic stuff.
02:37I feel like you should get creative with the hate also.
02:39Because if you're going to say, oh, you're repetitive, you're also repetitive.
02:43Like, come up with better hate comments.
02:45Oh, I'm cringey?
02:46Okay.
02:47And?
02:48At least I'm trying.
02:49We're all cringey, right?
02:50Like, at some point, we're all cringey.
02:51Oh, you're unfunny?
02:52Okay.
02:54You know what I mean?
02:55Look, I'm being sassy, but please don't come at me.
02:57I literally cry about it.
02:58I started therapy thanks to the internet.
03:01And thanks to the people I was meeting.
03:03So sometimes people get to you, I think.
03:05It started bothering me after a point, because I'm an introvert in general.
03:08And when I do comedy, people can't put the two and two together.
03:11And so when they meet me, they expect this flamboyant, you know, person
03:14who's so extra about everything.
03:16But then they meet me, and I'm like, I'm this.
03:18I'm reserved.
03:19I talk.
03:20They were expecting maybe tons of jokes, you know, coming out of my mouth,
03:23one after the other.
03:24And that doesn't happen.
03:26So after a point, I started getting scared of meeting people, because they
03:29would say things like, oh, are you upset?
03:32You look different.
03:33Oh, you're so skinny in real life, huh?
03:36So after a point, you try to bow yourself.
03:39Maybe I shouldn't meet people.
03:41You know, maybe internet is fine.
03:43Of course, on the internet as well, you read comments.
03:45And some days are good.
03:46So you're like, okay, I don't care.
03:47I read the good comments.
03:48They are crap.
03:49But sometimes that one simple bad comment, even if it's just, you are
03:53cringe, that will get to you so much more than the good things, which are
03:57like literally paragraphs, right?
03:59I started Healthy A Few Years Back, which really helped, because I was
04:03struggling so much with making content and doing it for people, because I
04:06was just reading the hate comments, and it would get to me, and I would
04:09cry about it.
04:10And I really thought that maybe I should stop.
04:12It's not aligned with my personality.
04:14How does that work?
04:15I completely forgot that it's performance.
04:17What I'm doing is performance.
04:18It doesn't have to align with my personality.
04:20I'm doing character work.
04:22I'm not putting my authentic self out there in all situations.
04:25So I think that appreciation for your self-worth and your self-worth is also
04:30extremely important.
04:31And you always keep your, hold yourself very high, because, you know,
04:35otherwise people will take you down.
04:37So that's extremely important.
04:38And I'm trying to do that.
04:39But like I said, you do have bad days.
04:41But now, thankfully, I have good days more than the bad days.
04:45I think after a point, you have to stop being a people pleaser.
04:49So fortunately, that gave me a prelude.
04:52I began with fitness.
04:54That was my first genre I took on.
04:56It's a very difficult genre to begin with when it comes to hate comments.
04:59So in my first two months, I got trained.
05:01This is how life is going to be forever now.
05:04The only thing that affects me at this point is if my mother gets targeted
05:07or my sister gets targeted.
05:09How do you deal with it when, you know, they do come after the family
05:12or there are these random problems?
05:14I think it's more about training your mom and sister to deal with it.
05:19That's how I deal with it.
05:20I'm going to shift gears slightly.
05:22You know, doing a little bit of research.
05:24And the number is like some 50 billion to 200 billion theaters across the world.
05:30You know, the theater economy is at $250 billion right now.
05:352024, it's probably going to be 3,000 floors, you know, in India.
05:40Where do you think the theater economy in India is heading?
05:44I think for another five years, it's going to be great.
05:46And things are going to improve.
05:48Why do you say that?
05:50It's just where technology is going.
05:52I think to be able to understand what this planned TV thing is going to become
05:56going forward.
05:57And I say that from the perspective of having spoken to scientists
05:59and engineers on the podcast.
06:01I know where it's going.
06:02Social media is moving towards more anonymity.
06:06I do believe content creation will exist.
06:10I don't think influencers will exist.
06:12So what I mean is anyone who switches into something called IP creation,
06:16intellectual property creation, will survive.
06:19That means create shows, create media houses, create concerts.
06:22You'll be okay.
06:23Create businesses.
06:25Maybe create your own social media platform.
06:27So things are going to improve, but five years from now.
06:30Because of the AI revolution.
06:33For five years, every year,
06:35there's going to be even more money than the previous year.
06:37And it's already exorbitant money.
06:39It's unfairly good.
06:41Which is why even as a content creator,
06:44if we're making money off of content creation,
06:46I always take it with a little hesitation
06:48because I know that it's not the last five years from now.
