00:00I will always protect the most vulnerable.
00:03I said inflation is indeed the enemy.
00:05It makes everyone poorer.
00:06Leadership is not selling fairy tales.
00:21We start with questions to the Prime Minister.
00:23Welcome to the Prime Minister.
00:24I call Dr Alan Whitehead.
00:26Yeah!
00:28Question one, Mr Speaker.
00:30Prime Minister, welcome to the Prime Minister.
00:38Mr Speaker, this...
00:40Can I just say, don't damage the furniture.
00:42Tearing by all means, but don't damage, come on.
00:46Mr Speaker, this morning I had meetings
00:49with ministerial colleagues and others.
00:51In addition to my duties in this House,
00:53I shall have further such meetings later today.
00:56Dr Alan Whitehead.
00:57I'd like to congratulate the Prime Minister
01:00on his new post and indeed as being the first
01:05Prime Minister of a South Asian heritage,
01:09which will be a cause of great pride
01:12among many of my constituents.
01:14During his Prime Ministerial campaigns,
01:18the last Prime Ministerial campaign he ran,
01:22he pledged to prohibit any development
01:27of onshore wind, which is now the cheapest form
01:32of power available to us in the country.
01:34Now he is Prime Minister,
01:36will he change his mind on that point?
01:39When it comes to energy policy,
01:40I stick by what we said in our manifesto, Mr Speaker.
01:43The important thing is though to focus
01:46on our long-term energy security.
01:47That means more renewables, more offshore wind
01:50and indeed more nuclear.
01:51That's what this government will deliver.
01:53I'm surprised, Mr Speaker, to be asking the question
01:56and I know you're shocked, Mr Speaker, too,
01:58because I know that you, like many people,
02:00thought I would have already been offered
02:01a Ministerial post.
02:02Yeah!
02:07Give him a job!
02:13Let me tell you, I didn't hold my breath.
02:14Philip Dixon.
02:18Go figure, as Joe Biden might say.
02:23Can I congratulate my right honourable friend
02:28on becoming Prime Minister?
02:29He's absolutely the right person for the job.
02:33His two immediate predecessors made levelling up
02:37a key part of their agenda.
02:39Would he reaffirm his commitment to levelling up?
02:43I'm grateful to my honourable friend for his warm remarks.
02:46I can confirm he must be the only person, Mr Speaker,
02:49who texted me to say that he did not want a job
02:52in the last 24 hours.
02:54But I can give him my cast-iron commitment to levelling up,
02:57particularly in Yorkshire.
02:59And may I welcome the Prime Minister.
03:01The first British Asian Prime Minister
03:03is a significant moment in our national story.
03:07And it's a reminder that for all the challenges
03:09we face as a country, Britain is a place
03:12where people of all races and all beliefs
03:14can fulfil their dream.
03:16It's part of what makes us all so proud to be British.
03:20Was his Home Secretary right to resign last week
03:24for a breach of security?
03:25Prime Minister, the Home Secretary made an error of judgement,
03:28but she recognised that.
03:30She raised the matter and she accepted her mistake.
03:33And that's why I was delighted to welcome back
03:37into a united Cabinet that brings experience
03:41and stability to the heart of government.
03:44And let me tell you, Mr Speaker,
03:45what the Home Secretary will be focused on.
03:48She'll be focused on cracking down on criminals,
03:51on defending our borders,
03:54while the party opposite remains soft on crime
03:57and in favour of unlimited immigration.
04:02On the steps of Downing Street,
04:04he also admitted what the whole country knows.
04:07The Tories have crashed the economy
04:10and now somebody has to pay for their mess.
04:13I say it shouldn't be working people
04:16who've been hammered time and again by this lot,
04:18but those with the broadest shoulders must step up.
04:22Does he agree?
04:22Mr Speaker, my record is clear.
04:26When times are difficult in this country,
04:29I will always protect the most vulnerable.
04:32That is the values of our compassionate party.
04:35We did it in COVID and we will do that again.
04:37Mr Speaker, he says he'll protect the most vulnerable.
04:39Let's test that.
04:41The government currently allows very rich people to live here,
04:45but register abroad for tax purposes.
04:48I don't need to explain to the Prime Minister
04:50how non-DOM status works.
04:52He already knows all about that.
04:55It costs the Treasury £3.2 billion every year.
05:00Why doesn't he put his money where his mouth is
05:03and get rid of it?
05:04I am glad, Mr Speaker,
05:06that the party opposite, the honourable gentleman,
05:08has finally realised that spending does need to be paid for.
05:15Oh my God, come on.
05:19Oh!
05:21Mr Speaker.
05:22Oh!
05:25Shh!
05:26It'll take a long time to get through this paper
05:28if we carry on like this.
05:29Prime Minister.
05:31Mr Speaker, he talks about mandates,
05:33about votes, about elections.
05:35It's a bit rich coming from the person
05:37who tried to overturn the biggest democratic vote
05:40in our country's history.
05:44Our mandate is based on a manifesto
05:47that we were elected on
05:48to remind him an election that we won and they lost.
05:54A mandate that says we want a stronger NHS,
05:56better schools, safer streets,
05:59control of our borders and levelling up.
06:01That is the mandate that I and this government
06:04will deliver for the British people.
06:07A few days ago, I was going to put my question
06:10to the former Prime Minister,
06:12but my inbox has been full of emails
06:14from constituents of Leuchtturmese
06:16writing to me about their desperate situation,
06:18of their wages simply not going far enough.
06:21I'm also receiving emails about rents going up,
06:24energy prices going up, mortgages going up
06:28and of course the cost of living is already up.
06:31This week, my constituents are writing to me
06:34demanding a general election
06:36and I absolutely agree with them.
06:39So can the Prime Minister tell me and my constituents
06:42when there will be a general election?
06:45I said inflation is indeed the enemy.
06:47It makes everyone poorer, it erodes savings
06:49and that's why it will be a priority of our government
06:52to grip and reduce inflation
06:54and provide support to those who need it as we do.
06:56Leadership is not selling fairy tales.
07:00It is confronting challenges
07:02and that is the leadership the British people
07:04will get from this government.
