A woman has been handed an 18 month community order after pleading guilty to damaging a police car as part of the Ely riots in May 2023. She admitted to shouting at the police that they should burn to death, she says she is deeply remorseful, and mortified by her actions.

00:00The Ely riots back in May 2023 was a dark time for the area, with thousands of pounds
00:07worth of damaged cars, cars destroyed, police and civilians injured and fear among locals.
00:13They all started after two teenagers, 16-year-old Kyrie Sullivan and 15-year-old Harvey Evans
00:18were killed minutes after CCTV footage captured the pair being chased by a police vehicle.
00:25Rioting started soon after, and well over a year after the incident, a woman has now
00:28pled guilty to her part in the riots.
00:3153-year-old Janine Raffel has been sentenced to an 18-month community order and told to
00:36pay £744 after damaging a police car.
00:41After being told that she said she hoped police officers burnt to death and needed to be put
00:45down, her defence barrister said she was mortified by her language and is deeply remorseful over
00:50her actions.
00:52District Judge Stephen Harms said although it was an emotional day for the area, it did
00:55not excuse any of her behaviour.
