00:00Following the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan, DTI BMDPO organized, with the help of the Philippine Coconut Authority, the first Coconut Philippines Trade Fair in the country.
00:13We have with us now, Dr. Dexter Bute, Administrator and CEO of the Philippine Coconut Authority, or PCA, and Sir Emerson Labang,
00:23the Supervising Trade Industry Development Specialist of the Department of Trade and Industry.
00:27Gentlemen, welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:29Good morning.
00:30Good morning.
00:31Good morning, Ms. Diana and Mr. Audrey.
00:34Okay.
00:35Sir, the Philippine Coconut Authority is responsible for the development of the coconut industry of our country, or the development of the country.
00:44What are the programs of your agency to help our coconut farmers?
00:50Thank you very much.
00:51First, what you said is correct.
00:53What is the mandate of the Philippine Coconut Authority?
00:55First, it is to promote the development of the coconut industry.
01:01Because we are generating income from our imports, or rather exports, of 2 billion dollars.
01:11So, we really need to have a huge opportunity for our economy.
01:17Next, it is to increase the living standards of our farmers.
01:23Those are the programs launched by DTI and other government agencies.
01:29Actually, we are 15 agencies that help our coconut farmers to increase the quality of their livelihood.
01:37That is what we call the law, the Republic Act 11-524, which is the Coconut Farmers and Industry Trust Fund.
01:50This is what the Coconut Levy talks about.
01:52This is a fund that we use to improve the lives of our farmers.
01:59Sir Audrey asked earlier, what are our programs?
02:02First, because we are the second in the world as a top producer of coconut.
02:11Because Indonesia is leading, it has 17 billion nuts production annually.
02:17Meanwhile, in the Philippines, we have 14.7 billion.
02:21So, very close.
02:22That is why the program of President Marcos, Ferdinand Marcos, our dear President,
02:28he launched the massive coconut planting.
02:31So, the agency is mandated to plant at least 100 million coconuts at the end of his term, by 2028.
02:41So that we can maintain our second rank.
02:46But that's not it.
02:47We need to surpass Indonesia.
02:50Aside from that, there is also the government's Fertilization Program.
02:54And it provides to increase production because the effect of fertilization is great
03:01if we can implement it.
03:04Because in the first year, when we fertilize, our production will increase.
03:09Because now, in the Philippines, our production per coconut, per tree,
03:14out of 10 coconuts, we only have 40 nuts per year.
03:19So, it's very weak.
03:20Compared to other countries, they can even make more, up to 110 nuts per tree per year.
03:27So, if we fertilize the project by 2025,
03:30in the first year, we will increase by 25% if we have a bono.
03:35So, the 40 will become 50.
03:38At the second year, our production will increase by 50%.
03:43So, our 40, in two years' time, will become 75,
03:48our production when it comes to fertilization.
03:52We should know that the total number of coconut trees that we have in the whole Philippines
03:57is 340 million coconut trees.
04:01Okay.
04:02PCA has good programs and plans for the coconut industry.
04:07But some may not know the benefits of coconut, sir.
04:11What are the benefits of coconut?
04:14Also, we are exporting, but the demand here in the Philippines is also strong.
04:19That's right. That's a good question.
04:21Because our domestic consumption is very low.
04:24With DTI, they know that.
04:25Our statistics show that our domestic consumption is very low.
04:30Through the trade fair that we will promote now,
04:33we will help to increase the awareness and purchasing power of our countrymen.
04:39Your question is, what are the benefits?
04:41I'll start with coconut water.
04:43That's my favorite. Coconut water.
04:46It's our prime source of potassium, calcium,
04:52and it can manage the level of sugar.
04:56People don't know. It's like electrolytes.
04:59Instead of drinking, I cannot mention the brands,
05:05use coconut water because it's very effective in strengthening our hydration,
05:12maintaining our blood sugars.
05:15So, it helps.
05:17And then another one, not many people know,
05:20is coconut sugar.
05:22I'll just cite it.
05:23It has a very low glycemic index.
05:26It's only 35 GI.
05:28Meanwhile, refined sugar has a 60 to 70 glycemic index.
05:34So, it's good for the health.
05:35It's really good for the health.
05:36So, if we have diabetes, we might use it.
05:42We can consider it as one of our products.
05:45As for DTI, what other products from coconut water
05:52that most Filipinos don't know about?
05:54Well, we will feature different collections from coconut-based products.
06:02One of them is food, as mentioned by the administrator.
06:06Coconut water, coconut sugar,
06:09and then we also have a lot of condiments from coconut.
06:13And then, definitely, our buyers of restaurants will realize,
06:18wow, this is how many different selections of coconut products there are.
06:22Our coffee owners, even our consumers who love coffee,
06:26they can use coconut milk.
06:28They can use coconut sugar, coconut sweetener.
06:31And then, for our buyers of hotels,
06:34they can take advantage of different health and wellness products from coconut.
06:39So, we have coconut oil, virgin coconut oil,
06:43and different cosmetics made of coconut products.
06:46Oh, makeup?
06:47Yes.
06:48Cosmetics, soaps, lotions, and so on.
06:51And then, we will also be featuring different non-food products of coconut,
06:57like furniture, home displays, and even industrial products.
07:02So, we hope that our buyers who visit the trade fair,
07:05they would realize, wow, the coconut industry has a lot of opportunity.
07:13So, maybe we have our investors to visit,
07:16and they would be able to talk to our coconut farmers,
07:19coconut cooperatives that are in the trade fair,
07:22and maybe they would discover that this is the business opportunity from the coconut industry.
07:27How many exhibitors are there in the fair?
07:30We're glad to feature at least 140 exhibitors from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
07:36And, of course, we will highlight our coconut beneficiaries,
07:40our coconut farmers,
07:42and these are the people we know who are really beneficiaries of the Coconut Farmers Industry Trust Fund.
07:48Thank you, Sir Emerson.
07:49You should come here sometimes.
07:51You will be able to follow the guesting of products that are not familiar to Filipinos.
07:56You drink coffee every day.
07:57Yes.
07:58You should use coconut sugar.
07:59Yes, sugar.
08:00It's just that we also have coconut flour.
08:02Okay.
08:03So, for our bakers, is that okay?
08:05Yes, for our bakers.
08:06Okay.
08:07Is it cheaper than what we're going to compare?
08:09It's just the same price.
08:11So, normally, we also combine it with our ordinary flour.
08:15What he said earlier about sugar is important.
08:18The glycemic index is lower.
08:20But, let's talk about the upcoming trade fair.
08:23What should our fellow Filipinos expect here?
08:26Yes.
08:27Especially during the holidays, right?
08:28You can buy gifts there, right, Sir?
08:30Yes, exactly, Ma'am.
08:31Because this Coconut Philippines Trade Fair, it's the first that we have organized for our coconut farmers.
08:37It's at the same time as the Christmas Village of DTI, also in the same venue.
08:41And, as I mentioned, we will be featuring our cooperatives, our coconut farmers from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
08:48And our shoppers would observe that the products from Luzon are different.
08:54These are their focus products from Mindanao and from Visayas.
08:58And then, aside from that, our aspiring entrepreneurs, they can talk to our Coconut Farmers Industry Development Plan Implementing Agencies.
09:09So, we have different government agencies supporting this program so that they can discuss their different programs,
09:18not only for coconut farmers, but even for the families of our farmers.
09:22Okay. So, clearly, this is a big help to our farmers, Filipino entrepreneurs, and also on a macro level, Sir.
09:28How can this trade fair help the economy of our country?
09:32First of all, we have a total of 2.8 million coconut farmers.
09:38And we have more than 1,000 cooperatives.
09:41That's why we have 15 agencies that support their loans.
09:48We have the Land Bank, the DVP, and our Cooperative Authority
09:54that work together to build marketability and help our cooperatives so that they can earn more.
10:06There's also the educational part.
10:08There's our test to strengthen the technical aspects of our farmers.
10:18How to produce coconut products in a proper way.
10:21There's everything.
10:23There are also training centers for proper agricultural practices.
10:30There's also a CHED to teach the children of our farmers.
10:35So, if you look at it, we can really improve the quality of life of our farmers.
10:42It will also improve the marketability of their livelihoods.
10:47You know, Dayan, this is a good news.
10:49If I remember, decades ago, one of the problems of our country was the coconut farmers.
10:56Because this industry was declining, and the farmers were called out by the society.
11:03So, this development, that we become number two in the world.
11:07In terms of production, right?
11:09It's a big development for our country.
11:11If you look at it, we have a lot of coconuts here in the Philippines.
11:15Let's not neglect the benefits of coconuts.
11:19Let's take advantage of it so that we can increase the local demand.
11:23Alright, please to invite our viewers to join in the fair.
11:26Yes, thank you so much, ma'am.
11:28And we are inviting everyone.
11:31Our aspiring entrepreneurs, our shoppers, our institutional buyers, and even everyone.
11:39If you have a farmland, a coconut farmland, you're very much welcome to visit,
11:44and join, support our coconut farmers upcoming Coconut Philippines Trade Fair.
11:49So, this will happen from December 2 to December 4 at Mega Trade Halls 1, Level 5, SM Mega Mall.
11:55So, we hope that you can do your Christmas shopping at our Coconut Philippines Trade Fair,
12:01and meet, and show your support for our coconut farmers.
12:05Dr. Dexter?
12:07Again, thank you so much for this opportunity.
12:10You gave us more hope for our coconut farming.
12:15It's true that we need to increase the living standards of our farmers.
12:20That's why we're inviting the public to buy our coconut products.
12:25Not only coconut products, but we also have intercropping.
12:28We have coffee, cocoa, and rice.
12:31And we also have a lot of livestock, which is a part of our income.
12:39So, I'm inviting everyone to support our Coconut Philippines.
12:44I can't tell you when and where.
12:46So, that's all. Thank you so much for this rare opportunity to be with you.
12:51From December 2 to 4.
12:53You know that we'll be giving away coconuts to our fellow farmers.
12:56Hopefully, in the coming years, we'll be the number one producing coconut products.
12:59Why not? We look forward to that.
13:01Again, we're here with Dr. Dexter Buted and Sir Emerson Labang of DTI.
13:06Thank you so much and congratulations.
