00:00Hi, I'm health reporter Sarah McCann. There has been a breakthrough for people with asthma
00:05after the first new treatment in 50 years has been hailed as a game changer. A clinical
00:11trial of the drug Benraluzimab has found that it is more effective than the standard steroid
00:17treatments. Benraluzimab is a monoclonal antibody. This type of drug, which is given via an injection,
00:25activates specific white blood cells to help reduce lung inflammation. Researchers at King's
00:31College London have found that asthma patients and patients with COPD are less likely to
00:37suffer wheezing and breathlessness four weeks after being given the drug. The news comes
00:43as NICE, the Scottish Guidelines Network, and the British Thoracic Society have collaborated
00:48for the first time to develop a UK-wide asthma guideline. This recommends prescribing combination
00:56treatments for people with asthma. You can find out more about asthma, signs, symptoms
01:03and treatment available at nhs.uk.
