06:27Sweden has formally asked China to cooperate with an investigation into the suspected sabotage
06:32of two data cables running under the Baltic Sea.
06:36The fiber optic cables, one running from Finland to Germany and the other from Lithuania to
06:40Sweden were damaged last week in an area where the Chinese bulk carrier Ipeng-3 had
06:46been seen.
06:47With this request, obviously we think it's extremely important to find out exactly what
06:54happened and of course we expect also China to comply with the request we have sent China.
07:01The Ipeng-3 is currently anchored in international waters between Sweden and Denmark, where it's
07:07being monitored by several vessels, including those belonging to the Danish Navy.
07:12The Wall Street Journal reported that investigators suspect the Ipeng-3 of deliberately severing
07:17the fiber optic cables by dragging its anchor along the seabed.
07:22Authorities in Beijing said they had no information about the ship and denied any responsibility.
07:37Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk said this wasn't the first time suspected sabotage had
07:42happened in the Baltic Sea.
07:44The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which carried gas from Russia to Germany, were both damaged
07:50in explosions in 2022.
07:53And in 2023, the Baltic Connector gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia was seriously
07:59damaged.
08:04British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said the government will overhaul the immigration
08:08system after new data showed arrivals to the country had hit a record high.
08:13Figures released by the Office for National Statistics put net migration at more than
08:18900,000 in the year to June 2023.
08:22Starmer blamed those numbers on the previous Conservative government.
08:26Because a failure on this scale isn't just bad luck, it isn't a global trend or taking
08:34your eye off the ball. No, this is a different order of failure. This happened by design
08:43not accident. Policies were reformed deliberately to liberalise immigration. Brexit was used

09:08That system gives applicants points for specific skills and qualifications and those who don't
09:14meet the threshold aren't granted a visa.
09:17Immigration is a divisive topic in the UK, with many voters concerned about the strain
09:21on public services caused by a large influx of people.
09:25But some sectors, including healthcare, argue they'd be unable to function without staff
09:30brought in from abroad.
09:37Portugal's government announced plans to invest 20 million euros in 600 new vehicles for the
09:42country's police force and national guard.
09:46Portugal's Prime Minister said the extra investment was necessary and stated that he wanted to
09:51value the careers of public administration employees, especially security forces.
09:58However, Portugal's national police union said the investment was insufficient and below
10:04requirements.
10:06The union president said some Portuguese police equipment is in varying states of decay and
10:12without investment, the police grind to a halt.
