In a world-first move, Australia has passed a law banning children under the age of 16 from using social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. The law, which was approved by parliament with bipartisan support, aims to protect kids from the harmful effects of online content, including body image issues and cyberbullying. But the legislation has sparked mixed reactions across the nation, with some applauding the government's commitment to child safety, while others question how it will be enforced and if it infringes on personal freedoms. Is this bold new law the right solution or an overreach?

02:52I think that it's a good idea. I think that it's got the right intentions.
02:55I think that sometimes kids can be too young and social media
02:58are exposed to a lot of things that probably shouldn't be exposed to when you're younger.
03:02I think there are dangers with social media usage,
03:05but there was no indication of how this is going to be implemented
03:09to stop the people using it, or the under-16s using it.
03:14I think it's also bad because it might mean that a lot of older Australians
03:18are going to have to provide ID to these digital companies.
03:21I don't think there's a way really even to police it.
03:23I don't think it will actually change a lot
03:25because I don't see that there's really a wrong way to police it.
03:28Looking back on it now, remembering some of the things I saw on it,
03:32it was a little bit sort of traumatic.
03:35Some of those things aren't good for a developing mind to see.
03:39So I think it's good that the government's done this ban,
03:42but in terms of enforcement, I'm not sure how it will really be carried out.
