The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has expressed alarm over increased civilian casualties in northwest Syria. The spike in violence follows a shock offensive by rebel forces in Aleppo, which had been held by government forces since 2016.

00:07Our office has documented a number of extremely concerning incidents resulting in multiple
00:14civilian casualties, including a high number of women and children stemming from attacks
00:20by both Harat Tahrir al-Shams, or HTS, and by pro-government forces.
00:28This comes after rebel forces in Syria seized most of the city of Aleppo and Idlib province.
00:35The groups say they are now advancing on Syria's fourth largest city, Hama.
00:40The UN says the surge in violence has caused a spike in civilian deaths.
