In this video, PGA Professional Nick Drane explains how to stop pushing your irons.
Transcript
00:00Hi, my name is Nick Drane. I'm a PGA professional and master fitting specialist here at the
00:09Titleist Performance Centre at Woburn. In this video, we're going to talk about how
00:12to start pushing your irons. The fundamentals within your setup are going to help you deliver
00:16the club in the correct fashion to hit the golf ball in your right direction. A lot of
00:22the time I see incorrect setup position, primarily around ball position. So if I demonstrate
00:27for you now, if I have the ball positioned too far back in my stance, that's going to
00:32cause the club to swing out to the right with the club face open primarily. It's going to
00:37allow the ball to stay right at my target. Ideally, what we'd like to see is the ball
00:42just left of middle. So as I come into the golf ball, my club is now swinging more towards
00:49my target with the club face square to my path. And then I can start it at my target
00:54with a much straighter golf shot. One key part of being able to hit your irons in the
00:58right direction is being properly fit for them. So you're a PGA professional, so they
01:02can fit you accordingly for your right lie angle, which is going to help you with a tighter
01:06shot dispersion. I'm now going to demonstrate to you what happens if the ball position is
01:10too far back in my stance. You'll see my target, the flag out in front. If I now show you into
01:16my setup, my shoulders are now aligned a long way to the right of my target. If I put
01:25the ball position just left of middle where I ideally want it, my shoulders are now properly
01:32aligned. I can go ahead and hit the shot at my target. As you can see, that ball flew
01:44towards my target. The golf swing hasn't changed, but I've made sure that my fundamentals
01:49are correct. A really simple exercise you can do to keep an eye on your fundamentals
01:53and your ball position is with a couple of alignment sticks, or a couple of golf clubs
01:56will do as well, is pop one down parallel to your feet. And then I've got my other alignment
02:01stick relative to my ball position. So as you'll see here, it is just left of middle
02:08and it's going to ensure that I have the correct ball position every single time.
