Scientists know why people are so enthusiastic about immersive art. For neuroaesthetics expert Susan Magsamen, one thing is clear: art is as important for our well-being as a good night's sleep and exercise.

00:00I think we like immersive arts so much because they make us feel good.
00:06It brings to the forefront all of the sensory systems that we have been wired for and often
00:14don't use in our daily lives.
00:16So this idea of being able to touch, to smell, to feel, to see, to use the vibration of sound
00:25and music to really enliven our bodies and our brains.
00:30Sensory experiences activate synapses, which connect different areas of the brain and form
00:35new neuronal structures.
00:38These small changes influence how we feel, think, and behave.
00:43We're learning more and more that our well-being, our flourishing, our physical health, and
00:50our growth is highly influenced by the fact that we are wired for the arts.
00:56And for a long time, I think we have set that aside and thought that the arts were nice
01:02to have, a luxury, something that you do when you have time.
01:06And now what we're finding is that they're as important as nutrition, good sleep, and
01:12exercise.
01:13The arts are absolutely essential to our well-being.
