00:00Maybe I have an idea about where the story could go.
00:03Oh yeah? Well, let's hear it.
00:05Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're looking at the best original shows
00:09and movies that landed on Netflix in 2024.
00:12Bear in mind a couple of these debuted at film festivals a year earlier.
00:16My agent said it would get me seen.
00:19It's good exposure, it'll get you seen.
00:23Number 10, The Gentleman, Season 1.
00:26Daddy, what have you been up to?
00:292019's The Gentleman was a return to form for Guy Ritchie,
00:33offering the blend of fast-paced action, witticisms, and editing the director is known for.
00:37While you should definitely watch that underrated film,
00:40it isn't required viewing to follow this Netflix spin-off.
00:43Following a new cast of characters,
00:45The Gentleman shares two key elements with its predecessor.
00:48The title, duh, and aristocrats getting mixed up with gangsters.
00:51Is it a threat I sense in the equation?
00:53Absolutely not.
00:55Look, it's a lot to take on board, I can understand that.
00:58Normally, in these kind of situations, certain discussions have been made beforehand.
01:02And normally, the weak-willed, work-shy, public school-educated heir
01:06takes the money and rolls over like a good little boy.
01:09Whereas the movie focuses more on the gangsters,
01:12the series is told from an aristocratic perspective.
01:15Given their unlawful business partners, though,
01:18it's only a matter of time until the aristocrats become gangsters themselves.
01:21It's a fresh spin that still functions within the original film's universe,
01:25serving as a welcome companion piece and standalone entry.
01:28People either survive in the jungle or exist in the zoo.
01:33Few recognize the significance of the paradoxical reconciliation of the two.
01:45Five more episodes await in the new year,
01:47but Cobra Kai kicked off its final season in 2024.
01:50After some spirited brainstorming and ad hoc folks grouping,
01:54and also a dojo-wide vote, we have a winner.
01:59We give you...
02:01Miyagi Bang Karate!
02:04Although several enemies have become friends,
02:07some things never change in the Karate Kid universe.
02:10There are still scores to settle, sides to choose, and morally gray areas to traverse.
02:15Even Mr. Miyagi might not have been as clean-cut as Daniel thought.
02:18He identified his attacker as Kisuki Miyagi.
02:22Kisuki Miyagi?
02:24Miyagi-san had a brother?
02:27Not that I know of.
02:30Look, that's Mr. Miyagi, but the name is wrong.
02:35And he was born in 1924, not 1918.
02:39While Daniel questions everything he learned from his mentor,
02:42Kreese severs ties with his former protege-turned-rival Johnny.
02:46As everyone heads to Barcelona for the Sekai Taikai,
02:49emotional stakes are even higher than the physical ones in the ring.
02:52That said, the fight choreography is as intense as ever,
02:56setting us up for hopefully a rousing final showdown.
02:59So you're gonna have to kick higher and harder than ever before.
03:04Johnny, the Soviet Union doesn't even exist anymore.
03:10Is that a wild room?
03:14I have no idea what that is.
03:16Not every show is worth a three-year wait between seasons,
03:20but Arcane continued to deliver on virtually every front.
03:23In just two seasons, Arcane encompassed more intricate world-building,
03:27arresting visuals and gripping character arcs than some shows give us with 200 episodes.
03:32Your mother will have justice.
03:36I swear it.
03:38Change is at the center of this final season,
03:41as Caitlin's compassion and diplomacy take a backseat to revenge
03:44and what she views as redemption.
03:46With Powder seemingly gone,
03:48Jinx is torn between giving up on life and being immortalized as a symbol.
03:52Yep, that's me.
03:54You ever need to curse a sibling or a family or a society?
03:59My card.
04:01Caught in the middle is Vi, as she attempts to stop the monster she created.
04:05Arcane will break your heart over and over again,
04:08yet you'll still eagerly plunge into the next episode all the way up to the finale.
04:14The science and philosophies behind Three-Body Problem may be complex,
04:20but the show's ideas are presented in a surprisingly digestible manner.
04:24That's largely because the concepts at the story's core don't overshadow the relatable characters.
04:29Plus, anyone can understand the gravitas of a ticking clock.
04:33Tomorrow at midnight.
04:39You don't want it to get to zero.
04:43Nothing good ever happens at zero.
04:45The show begins with a countdown that promises to have consequences on a global scale.
04:50The question is whether the outcome will bring about humanity's end or usher us into the future.
04:55Could it be both?
04:57Most of us have to stay behind.
04:59But that's alright.
05:03If one of us survives, we all survive.
05:07You'll welcome us, won't you?
05:10Either way, several moments will leave your jaw on the floor well before the countdown nears zero.
05:16The show's sweeping scale may make you feel insignificant.
05:19However, even bugs can survive in environments where supposedly more advanced species perish.
05:25We spray pesticides from planes.
05:27We put poison in the ground.
05:29We try and sterilize them.
05:31We swat them, zap them, step on them.
05:34Look around.
05:37They're not going anywhere.
05:40Wallace and Gromit, Vengeance Most Foul.
05:42You can't go wrong with Wallace and Gromit, who return in their first adventure since 2008,
05:47and their first feature in almost two decades.
05:50Vengeance Most Foul also marks the return of the duo's most fiendish foe, Feathers McGraw.
05:59Admittedly, we were on the fence about bringing the devious penguin back,
06:02as it would only invite more comparisons to the wrong trousers.
06:05That short is about as perfect as filmmaking gets.
06:20While we won't go as far as to say that Vengeance Most Foul is perfect, it comes close.
06:25The film is every bit as inventive as the series' past entries,
06:28while providing modern commentary on smart devices, which have pros and cons.
06:33It all depends on whose hands or wings the technology falls into.
06:57Patricia Highsmith's novel has been adapted multiple times.
07:01The 1999 film starring Matt Damon being the most well-known version.
07:04While you wouldn't think there'd be much left to do with the source material,
07:07this miniseries proves there are still numerous layers to the enigmatic titular character.
07:23Director Stephen Zalian turns in a masterclass of visual storytelling,
07:27with Robert Elswit's cinematography elevating every shot.
07:30On a technical level, it's as well-crafted as any Netflix series to date.
07:35Andrew Scott's reserved performance also says more than narration or dialogue ever could.
07:40Scott keeps everything on the inside as a man whose entire life is a facade.
07:44Mr. Ripley remains a mystery by the end, but we can safely say what he is,
07:49a chameleon of a con man.
07:58Casting is the key in His Three Daughters,
08:01with flawless performances from Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne and Elizabeth Olsen.
08:06While the three play the titular daughters, they aren't exactly sisters in a meaningful sense.
08:28They come under one roof to be by their dying father's side.
08:32After his time inevitably comes, though, what's next?
08:35Do the three part ways for good, or will this tragedy provide the basis for a real relationship to grow?
08:41His Three Daughters revolves around saying goodbye,
08:44but it's just as much about starting anew, which can sometimes be even more daunting.
08:49Director Azizel Jacob's deeply personal script doesn't hit a false note,
08:53each line delivered with emotional honesty.
08:56You are unlike anyone you've ever met.
08:58You are someone who has been through a lot.
09:00You are someone who has been through a lot.
09:02You are someone who has been through a lot.
09:04You are someone who has been through a lot.
09:06You are someone who has been through a lot.
09:12You at least act like we have something more in common.
09:15This is what I was trying to say.
09:17We each have our own stories, but we don't know the others.
09:21We assume we do.
09:22We do.
09:233.
09:24Emilia Pérez
09:25Actually, we might have spoken too soon as three phenomenal performances are also at
09:47the core of Emilia Pérez.
09:48Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez need no introduction, but this operatic caper pushes them to depths
09:54mainstream audiences rarely have an opportunity to see.
09:57The film also includes a star-making turn from Carla Sofía Gascon, who just might break
10:02new ground for trans performers at the Academy Awards.
10:20Just as gender is a spectrum, it's impossible to put Jacques Odiar's film into one box.
10:25Emilia Pérez is a comedy, a tragedy, a gritty crime drama, a love story, a feature-length
10:31telenovela, and a toe-tapping musical all rolled into one.
10:35Somehow, none of these elements feel out of place in one of the year's more unique films.
10:522.
10:56Nobody Wants This – Season 1
10:58Nobody wants more Adam Brody and Kristen Bell in their lives.
11:01Brody's Noah and Bell's Joanne are made for each other.
11:04There's just one elephant in the room.
11:06He's a Jewish rabbi, and she doesn't subscribe to any faith.
11:17Religion aside, Nobody Wants This understands that relationships are rarely about just two
11:21people.
11:22It can often feel like you're also dating your significant other's family and friends.
11:26If they don't approve, can there be a future?
11:39In Noah and Joanne's case, the chemistry is worth any confrontations along the way.
11:43The series explores relationships and religion through a relatable modern lens.
11:48Despite their different backgrounds, we have no trouble believing these two would fall
11:51in love and fight to be together.
12:07Before we unveil our top pick, here are some honorable mentions.
12:11Rebel Ridge – An intense and intelligent thriller about challenging an unlawful system.
12:23Monsters – The Lyle and Eric Menendez Story – A series so widely watched that it actually
12:29might get the Menendez brothers released.
12:45Bridgerton – Season 3 – Lady Whistledown's story reaches a crucial turning point.
13:08Maria – Singing Angelina Jolie's high praises for this Pablo Larraín film.
13:20Orion and the Dark – When you ask Charlie Kaufman to tell you a bedtime story, it's
13:24a dream come true.

13:51Baby Reindeer – The best Netflix series aren't always the ones on your radar months
13:56in advance.
13:58Sometimes you learn about a show through word of mouth, or you just stumble upon it while
14:01browsing.
14:02That's how many discovered Baby Reindeer, making them unprepared for the emotional roller
14:06coaster that followed.
14:17Based on Richard Gad's one-man show and personal experiences, this Emmy-winning miniseries
14:21starts with an act of kindness that spirals into a nightmare.
14:25While Gad's experience is singular, anyone who has ever endured trauma will identify
14:30with his story.
14:45Amid all the heartbreak and torment, Baby Reindeer became an unlikely source of healing.
14:49From survivors of sexual violence to the LGBTQIA plus community, the show sent a simple
14:54yet life-affirming message many needed in 2024 – you aren't alone.
