Thousands in South Korea demand Yoon's resignation as impeachment vote nears
South Korea's protesters rally outside the National Assembly in Seoul on Dec. 6, 2024 to demand President Yoon Suk Yeol's resignation over his botched attempt to impose martial law as opposition lawmakers plan an impeachment vote against him. The Korea Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), which led the protest, estimated that about 50,000 people gathered near parliament.
Lawmakers will vote on the main opposition Democratic Party's motion to impeach Yoon, who shocked the nation late Dec. 3 when he gave the military sweeping emergency powers in order to root out what he called 'anti-state forces. and overcome obstructionist political opponents. Yoon rescinded the declaration about six hours later after parliament, including some members of his party, voted to oppose the decree.
