Pope creates 21 new cardinals from around the world
Pope Francis created on Saturday, December 7, 21 new cardinals coming from 17 countries, including Italy, Peru, Argentina, Japan, Philippines, Algeria, India, and Britain, to reflect the diversity of the Catholic Church.
In a ritual-filled ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica, Francis elevated the churchmen to the second-highest rank in the global Church, offering each a special red hat and symbolic leadership of a Catholic parish in Rome.
Pope Francis, who led the ceremony with a large bruise on his chin reportedly due to a minor fall the previous morning, has now installed about 80% of the prelates who will elect the next pontiff.
