A 32-year-old Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officer was slapped with six charges at the Johor Baru Sessions Court for accepting bribes amounting to RM10,700, two years ago.

However, the accused, Muhammad Adzmin Zolkepli, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read to him before Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail on Monday (Dec 9).

00:26According to the charge sheet, the accused, who holds the rank of senior maritime officer
00:31at the agency's KEDA and Perlis headquarters, allegedly accepted valuable items in the form
00:37of cash ranging from 1,200 ringgit to 2,300 ringgit.
00:42The money was received from the owner of a marine supply company via transfers from the
00:47Maybank account of a middleman.
00:49The accused knew that the company's owner had dealings related to his official duties.
00:54All the offences were allegedly committed at a bank in Segamat between February and
00:58October 2022.
01:01The charges were brought under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which provides a sentence
01:05of up to two years' imprisonment, a fine or both, upon conviction.
01:10During the proceeding, the prosecution requested bail of 20,000 ringgit with a local surety,
01:16along with additional conditions including for the accused to surrender his passport
01:21to the court.
01:22However, lawyer Mohamed Noraza Majid, who represented the accused, appealed for the
01:28lowest possible bail.
01:29He informed the court that his client still serves as a senior officer in Sandakan with
01:35a monthly salary of 1,700 ringgit.
01:38He also supports his unemployed wife, a two-month-old child, his 65-year-old parents and an 85-year-old
01:46grandmother.
01:47The court then set bail at 7,000 ringgit and fixed February 7 for the case's next mention
01:53and submission of documents.
