Trupa Trupa are much more popular abroad than in Poland itself. Singer Grzegorz Kwiatkowski believes it's because of the themes they deal with in their music, history's darkest chapters, especially the Holocaust. Euronews Culture caught up with Grzegorz and the band in Gdańsk.

00:00Grzegorz Kwiatkowski is the singer in the punk band Trupa Trupa in the Polish city of Gdansk.
00:07The band mainly has fans abroad, probably the most famous being US singer Iggy Pop.
00:13Trupa Trupa is performing in the UK this week and will be heading to the USA next year.
00:19But Grzegorz is also a poet, a lecturer and much more.
00:24My poetry is connected to Trupa Trupa and Trupa Trupa is connected to my activism,
00:29my activism is connected to my poetry, my poetry is connected to my university life.
00:35So it's all connected but it's all a bit different.
00:40Grzegorz's greatest concern is to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive.
00:45In Gdansk, he has been campaigning for the memory of the city's former ghetto for eight years.
00:50For me it's a very symbolic place because I fighted many, many years for a situation where this place will be remembered and the city hall will make some actions and people, the tourists, visitors that are coming to Gdansk will have a chance to learn something from history.
01:21And to respect the victims of this very tragic place.
01:26Grzegorz's grandfather was held in the Stadthof concentration camp for forced labor during the
01:32Second World War. Grzegorz wants to fight against forgetting with his music, his poems and his activism.
01:40The memory culture is important just to be a good human being.
01:45We should remember about the tragedies and about the past to be a better people.
