South Africa revving up to host Formula One event in over 30 years
The roar of Formula One engines may soon return to South Africa's Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, north of Johannesburg, as the country pursues hosting an F1 race for the first time since 1993.
Africa's biggest racing circuit is making strategic moves to meet the rigorous standards required to host the prestigious motorsport event after a three-decade hiatus.
Kyalami has partnered with Apex Circuit Design, a leading motorsport engineering consultancy, to create a roadmap for obtaining FIA's Grade 1 certification, necessary to host an F1 Grand Prix.

00:30That's all. Because I break, it doesn't break. It doesn't break at all.
00:41Being here today, it's like a dream that has come true. And I do hope that I can continue to participate in this kind of sport.
01:05Until such time that I feel now it's time for me to develop others who had never had the opportunity to participate with people that have been driving for years. People that are coming from overseas to come and be part of this occasion.
02:05Before you bring in Formula One, because a lot of people don't have access to TVs. When they watch TV, they watch news. They don't watch Formula, but they don't know that there is this thing called motorsport, there's Formula One, there's endurance series in South Africa.
02:28There needs to be education that motorsport is a sport and it is part of sport. Sport in South Africa is soccer, cricket, rugby. This is not regarded as a sport. It's something for those that want to burn their cash.
02:58My question is, are we ready for Formula One? I certainly think a minority of our population will say yes. I'm not sure the majority of the population understands motorsport. So are we ready? I don't think we are.
03:25Is the facility ready? They're very close to it.
03:28We've got to lower the barrier of entry to the sport.
03:55The problem with the sport is that it needs an ecosystem. It doesn't need a person. To get the ecosystem right, we've got to create footfall. Why do you create footfall? Because once you create footfall, corporate South Africa steps up and pays attention. When corporate pays attention, they invest. When they invest, they reduce the cost. When you reduce the cost, you increase the footfall.
04:25I'm a huge car fanatic. So starting from the specs of the engines, hearing those huge roars. I'm in the neighborhood of Lone Hill and just hearing those roars every morning, it's really just an atmosphere that you want to get down and see.
04:55I feel like it's the adrenaline. Number one, I actually don't really watch it. But after today, I am like, this is insane. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I don
05:25I love it. I love it. It's just getting to see people do all of this without any effort, but with so much effort at the same time.
05:42A lot of my friends have been saying how they can't wait for the Formula One to come here. So there's a lot of excitement and there's a lot of demand for it. So it's definitely got to happen. It has to happen.
05:52There's so many people on a Sunday afternoon who just sit at home and watch Formula One. So there's definitely a market and there's definitely excitement for it to happen.
