Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim, a self-declared critic of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has expressed his disagreement with the Batu Puteh Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report's recommendation to initiate criminal investigations against the former prime minister over the 2018 decision.

During the debate on the report in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Dec 12), Hassan acknowledged the legal basis for the recommendations but questioned the necessity of pursuing criminal action against the the nonagenarian former PM.

He asked whether punishing Dr Mahathir would help Malaysia regain the lost territory, pointing out that the country’s claim to Batu Puteh was ultimately lost during another prime minister’s tenure.

00:00Almost, almost all, not all, almost all shortcomings and gains in this Suranjaya report,
00:15I support, except one.
00:23I do not agree with this Suranjaya report,
00:33which indicates that a police report was made against Dr Mahathir under the Penal Code.
00:47Suranjaya was appointed by the former head of state judges,
00:53who was later appointed as judge of the Supreme Court.
00:59Their gains may be based on the law, but their status is still Suranjaya Sehasatan.
01:09However, when a police report was made against Dr Mahathir,
01:20who was almost 100 years old,
01:24and entered the IJN,
01:27are we willing to issue an ID to our Prime Minister?
01:35Tan Sri, you know that I am not a critic of Dr Mahathir.
01:42I have been a critic of Dr Mahathir since I was young.
01:46A firm critic, but we should not be fair.
01:50Next, Tan Sri.
01:56We are not all losers.
02:00We lost to Batu Putih,
02:04but we lost to Batuan Tengah,
02:07which is on the Malaysian side.
02:10This means that we are not all losers.
02:14In this matter, I would like to say,
02:19that on 6 April 2012,
02:22the then Prime Minister,
02:24I will mention his name,
02:26Datuk Seri Najib Razak,
02:29at that time,
02:31in 2012,
02:34had built a maritime base in Batuan Tengah,
02:43and was completed on 29 August 2016.
02:49This means that we should remember the service of the people.
02:52We should not forget everything.
02:56So, I would like to ask,
03:01if Dr Mahathir was dragged to the police station,
03:07brought to court,
03:10found guilty,
03:12and sentenced to 5 years in prison under section 415B,
03:21if we punish Dr Mahathir,
03:25can we get back the Batu Putih that was lost?
03:32And the ICJ discussion was not at the time of Dr Mahathir as Prime Minister.
03:43I would like to ask,
03:46if the police report has not been made,
03:51do not make a police report.
03:54Enough is enough.
04:00It means that Dr Mahathir has no service to our country.
04:10Many ministers are here,
04:13their offices are in Putrajaya.
04:15Who built it?
04:19After we had a meeting this afternoon,
04:24some returned to Kangah,
04:27some returned to Johor Bahru.
04:29Who built Labo Raya?
04:34When we left the parliament,
04:37on a dark day,
04:38we looked at the buildings that were shining,
04:42shining all over the world.
04:44Who built all of that?
04:47Say it all,
04:50it does not matter.
04:52I strongly criticize Dr Mahathir,
04:58I appreciate the service of our leaders.
05:02Reopen the United Nations,
05:07Article 182,
05:11the service of Dr Mahathir,
05:14who established the system of parliamentary democracy,
05:21and the rule of law.
05:23There has never been a minister from the past until now,
05:27who has the courage to strengthen the people's power.
05:31So, I conclude,
05:34I ask the government today,
05:38do not support this RCA.
05:45If we fully support it,
05:47it means that we agree with the police report
05:50made to Dr Mahathir.
05:52I do not agree.
