00:00Yeah, pleased. You know, it's highly unlikely you come to a place like this and dominate the ball.
00:06So therefore, a big part of the game is what you're doing without it.
00:08And I thought we were excellent.
00:09I thought the tactical understanding of the players and the delivery of it, you know,
00:13they understand tactics, of course they do, but it's delivering it.
00:15And I thought the focus and the attention to detail, you know,
00:18the consistency within a performance, which I've spoken about endlessly, was on show today.
00:22You know, to keep doing all the ugly stuff, the hard yards, the hard work,
00:26and work as a team to make sure that we looked after ourselves.
00:29And I thought we did that very well today.
00:31How satisfying was it to see that resilience?
00:33The last time you were away from home was at Old Trafford.
00:35It's a very different story.
00:37Yeah, I don't think we were miles off Old Trafford.
00:40Obviously, people said that, you know, I was mad saying that,
00:43but you can't legislate for three complete errors.
00:46It's very difficult to legislate from that.
00:48I don't think during the open play there was that much wrong defensively.
00:51But back to today, the commitment from the players,
00:54the teamship of the players was certainly on show.
00:57You know, you've even got wide players.
00:58It's not natural to tend to do that.
01:00You know, Illy working super hard in front of Miko, who was excellent,
01:04and Youngie on that side with Jack working hard.
01:06You know, we know Jack's got quality and he didn't quite find their moments,
01:09but he's worked so diligently.
01:10Jesper comes on, doing the same shift.
01:12You know, this is good habits from a team, a group of players,
01:15and we're getting players back fit.
01:17The feel in the camp is strong again.
01:19We've got to keep doing that, of course.
01:21It's six clean sheets.
01:22It's not easy in the Premier League.
01:25Yeah, I mean, I haven't seen all the saves,
01:29but the one to the left early in the second, that looks a big save to me.
01:32I haven't seen the other ones.
01:33I think he'd probably think he should make the other ones,
01:35but that one's a big save, I think.
01:37Great reaction, but he's got a lot of people in front of him.
01:39They're working very hard today, I think, and I'm sure he respects that.
01:45No, it's the flare-up of the one previous year,
01:47so we're hopeful it settles down again quickly.
01:50We'll have to wait and see this week.
01:55Much was made of the daunting December.
01:57You had a brilliant start to it.
01:59Well, like I said, I wasn't being flippant about it.
02:01I've been in it long enough in the Premier League.
02:03You've got to play everyone,
02:04and there will be another manager asked about it.
02:06You know, I was asked.
02:07I said Pep had been looking at his run,
02:08and then people somehow thought I was putting myself in his category.
02:11I wasn't.
02:12I was just merely saying as a manager,
02:13he'll still be looking at his run.
02:14They'll be looking.
02:15All the press will be going,
02:16oh, look, they've got a tricky one coming up.
02:18That's the way it is.
02:19It's football management.
02:20It's in the Premier League,
02:21arguably the best league in the world,
02:23so you're going to have spells when it's awkward and it's tough.
02:25It's how you deal with it,
02:26and we've certainly dealt with one today really well,
02:28I think, by the attitude towards it.
02:30It doesn't guarantee the next one,
02:31but we had to take this on with the right frame of mind,
02:33body language, intent and desire,
02:35and we certainly did that.
02:36Janine?
02:37John, did you have to sacrifice attacking half-court today?
02:40Sorry?
02:41Did you have to sacrifice attacking half-court today?
02:44Yeah, you often do at grounds like this.
02:46You know, like I said at the beginning,
02:48it's very unlikely that you're going to come and dominate the ball.
02:50It's very unlikely statistically
02:52that you're going to dominate the chances,
02:53and so therefore you've got to do all the tactical side really,
02:57really well.
02:58These can operate in different ways.
02:59This year, the prowess from the set-pieces,
03:01not only their general play,
03:03you've got to deal with that,
03:04and I thought the players gave a great performance day in that respect.
03:09Working hard without the ball is still a skill.
03:11It's not something that's just a given.
03:13The tactical ideas of the team,
03:15the way that the coaches have worked this week diligently
03:17to make sure everyone knows their jobs,
03:19but then inevitably it comes down to the delivery,
03:21and they've delivered it very, very well today.
03:23Could there have been so much different delays?
03:26Yeah, delays on it.
03:28I mean, it's a great breakaway.
03:29We only found two or three really good quality moments
03:32when we got into the right area.
03:34We know that's been a challenge, an ongoing challenge.
03:36If he striked it earlier, you never know,
03:38but we're not going to be too greedy today.
03:40It's hard to come to these places and deliver both ends of the pitch,
03:43you know, defensively strong and in attack.
03:45We certainly got the defensive side and the tactical side right today.
03:48There's one over here, is there?
03:50Hi, Sean.
03:51A lot longer the managers usually get to prepare for a game for this one.
03:54Was there anything particularly identified about Arsenal
03:56that you thought you could get at from them?
03:58No, I mean, you know, we've known them under this manager a few seasons.
04:02Obviously the tactical, sorry, the set-piece thing,
04:04there's been a lot of noise about that.
04:06We know you've got to be diligent to that.
04:08But no, I think we look at our side, you know,
04:10we look at what we can do.
04:11Of course we make the players aware of the opposition,
04:14but often it's our delivery of performance,
04:16so I'm pleased with that, you know,
04:17and we simplified it for the players.
04:18We didn't start over again, loads and loads of detail.
04:20The basics, you know, the shape of the side,
04:22the pressing shape to recover, and then move as a unit.
04:26And I thought, it sounds really simple,
04:28it's not simple when you're out there
04:29and you've got a team trying to pick that to bits,
04:31but I thought their diligence today was excellent.
04:35Sorry, Sean, you mentioned the set-pieces.
04:38It's a big issue at this club because it's an unusual thing for Arsenal.
04:41They've been vulnerable set-pieces in the past.
04:45You've got big centre-halves and some big lads on the team.
04:48Did you go through them bit by bit?
04:51No, no, no.
04:52The staff do that.
04:53I don't do it.
04:54I've made it clear.
04:56Woney and Stoney, my assistants, if you like,
04:58they do it with the analytics team.
04:59They do a really good job.
05:01They certainly make players aware of different things.
05:03Their start at XI today was miles bigger than ours physically.
05:07It was a big start at XI that, you know,
05:08which Arsenal can mix and match because they've got lots of good players,
05:11of course, and a deep squad.
05:13But, yeah, I was pleased with that side of things defensively.
05:16The whole thing, really, defensively.
05:18Jordan made a couple of saves, one big one,
05:20but you think down here you're probably going to have a keeper who makes saves.
05:24So, yeah, I mean, it was just the diligence from the staff,
05:27but mainly from the players, you know.
05:28Lots of staffs are diligent, you know, all over the country.
05:30We all have analytics,
05:31although it makes a story that this new manager's got all these things.
05:34Everyone's got all these things.
05:35The players deserve credit because when they get out there,
05:37they've got to deliver on the knowledge that they've been given on any given Saturday
05:41and today we delivered that really well.
05:42Weren't you saying you were set to be specialists?
05:45No, they're not set to be specialists and all that.
05:48You know, they've had thousands of games in what they do.
05:52They've both got all the licences.
05:54I would expect they certainly know how to sort that piece out,
05:57I would imagine, as I do myself, but I leave it to them.
06:03Jordan, you play Arsenal,
06:04do you know a lot of the tactics when they come down that right side?
06:07Do you know of any teams,
06:08given all the golf and soccer,
06:09that are so quiet?
06:10What do you think was the key to that?
06:12Yeah, again, the diligence of the players.
06:14We show heat maps, like everyone does,
06:16about different attacking units,
06:18you know, and where we have to make sure that we're working hard.
06:21Duke, who I thought was exceptional today with his work ethic for the team.
06:24I thought the three in midfield were actually the way they worked.
06:27Manga as well, putting in a shift.
06:28And obviously, Gannon with his understanding,
06:31you know, he's a wild old fox, Gannon.
06:33He knows the script.
06:34He's played at lots of different clubs and, you know, had real experience.
06:36But, yeah, we didn't just look at that area.
06:39I said before the game, I was talking about set pieces,
06:41I said they've still got, you know, some fantastic players
06:43and they can change at will and they can change things tactically
06:46and different ways of playing in different formats.
06:48And they've showed that even more so this year
06:50with the strength in set pieces.
06:52So, you know, I'm pleased for the players
06:54and the way that we went about it.
06:56But it wasn't just one thing.
06:57You know, there's lots of different things they can do in other ways.
07:00But the way that we formatted it, I was really pleased with that as a staff.
07:03But the players' delivery is the biggest credit.
07:07Any further questions?
07:10Thanks, everyone.
