00:00The story about a prince who would come to be known as Scar, and an orphan named Mufasa.
00:06Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the questions we're hoping
00:11Mufasa the Lion King will answer to shed light on the untold chapters of this Disney ruler
00:16and his pride's lives.
00:18Circle is broken. There will be one Lion King.
00:2310. So how much of the Pride Lands does the light touch, exactly?
00:29In The Lion King, Mufasa gives Simba a glimpse of his future,
00:32pointing out the vast savannah he'll rule one day.
00:35Look, Simba. Everything the light touches is our kingdom.
00:41Wow.
00:41But everything the light touches? That's a bit vague, don't you think?
00:45What happens when the sun sets or it's cloudy? Do the borders just shift? And who decided
00:50sunlight was a reasonable marker for a kingdom's boundaries? Was there some kind of royal summit
00:55where everyone agreed on this?
00:56All of this will belong to me.
01:00It belongs to no one, but will be yours to protect. A great responsibility.
01:06Honestly, basing an entire kingdom on something as unpredictable as sunlight feels a little shaky.
01:11We just need someone to explain the logic behind this whole light touches rule,
01:15because as it stands, it raises more questions than it answers.
01:19Everything the light touches belongs to someone else.
01:27Funny, I thought you were going a whole different direction with this.
01:309. Who decided all hyenas are villainous?
01:34It's hard to believe an entire species could be bad,
01:37but in The Lion King, all the hyenas are seemingly Team Scar.
01:40But if you do this, you will start a war with Mufasa.
01:45Hyenas and lions have been at war since the beginning of time.
01:48But Mufasa's bloodline will end here.
01:52What went down between lions and hyenas to make the whole cackle turn against the pride?
01:56One theory suggests they symbolize marginalized groups in society,
02:00drawn to Scar's promise of shaking up the food chain.
02:03What could you possibly offer us?
02:06A place where you can fill your bellies.
02:08Where everything the light touches is yours for the kill.
02:13It kind of tracks, especially with the movie's subtle nods to darker moments in history.
02:17The 1994 film did hyenas dirty, describing them as, quote,
02:21"...slobbering, mangy, stupid poachers."
02:24Reportedly, that depiction offended some hyena biologists so much that one tried to sue Disney,
02:30and another called for a boycott.
02:31Here's hoping the prequel finally unpacks this interspecies beef.
02:35Oh, young master, one day you will be king.
02:39Then you can chase those slobbering, mangy, stupid poachers from dawn until dusk.
02:45Number 8.
02:46How does a top-of-the-food-chain predator maintain a kingdom?
02:49Okay, so in The Lion King, Mufasa explains the circle of life to Simba.
02:54Don't we eat the antelope?
02:55Yes, Simba, but let me explain.
02:58When we die, our bodies become the grass, and the antelope eat the grass.
03:04And so, we are all connected in the great circle of life.
03:09The symbolism is nice and all, but it makes zero sense.
03:12And no, we're not talking about lions turning into grass.
03:15Lions are at the top of the food chain.
03:17And as Simba later confirms, again, they're carnivores.
03:20Yeah, I'm starved.
03:22I could eat a whole zebra.
03:23Oh, here we go.
03:25No, no, no, kid.
03:26We're fresh on a zebra.
03:28And the antelope?
03:29Uh-oh.
03:29If our rulers were likely to eat us, we wouldn't be lining up to celebrate their kid's birth.
03:34You know, a new predator and another mouth to feed.
03:37So how did the lions manage to rule a kingdom made up largely of their prey?
03:41Also, they're definitely outnumbered.
03:43What is this ruling minority doing that makes everyone else think,
03:47yeah, this is totally fine?
03:48Everything you see exists together in a delicate balance.
03:52As king, you need to understand that balance and respect all the creatures,
03:58from the crawling ant to the leaping antelope.
04:00Number seven.
04:02What's the deal with Nala's father?
04:04There are a few theories about who Nala's father might be.
04:06And with so few males in the pride,
04:08it usually comes down to an unnamed lion who's no longer around,
04:12Scar or Mufasa.
04:14Ew!
04:16That's not gonna happen, Zazie.
04:17Never, ever.
04:18Nala and I are friends.
04:20And besides, she's afraid of rhinos.
04:24And he's never eaten an impala.
04:25I've tried it once.
04:26There were apparently plans to introduce another male as Nala's dad in the original animation,
04:31but that idea got scrapped.
04:33The creators were clearly aware of the implications,
04:36but perhaps hoped no one would catch on.
04:38We totally did.
04:39One day you two are going to be married.
04:42Yuck!
04:43I can't marry her.
04:44She's my friend.
04:46Yeah, it'd be so weird.
04:48In The Lion Guard, Rafiki mentions another lion who could be Nala's father,
04:52but we don't get much more info.
04:54Since Mufasa could tie into the Lion Guard timeline,
04:57it's the perfect opportunity to finally clear this up once and for all.
05:01Your heart is racing, Kaya.
05:03I am surprised you are able to stay so calm.
05:06It's not easy.
05:07Number six.
05:08Why did no one ever suspect Scar?
05:11Like, ever.
05:12From their first interaction in The Lion King,
05:14it's clear there's tension between the brothers.
05:16Sarabi and I didn't see you at the presentation of Simba.
05:21Was that today?
05:26Must have slipped my mind.
05:27They argue about Scar skipping Simba's presentation ceremony
05:31and his belief that he should be king.
05:32He even warns Mufasa not to turn his back on him.
05:36Don't turn your back on me, Scar.
05:39Oh no, Mufasa.
05:40Perhaps you shouldn't turn your back on me.
05:44Is that a challenge?
05:47I wouldn't dream of challenging you again.
05:50If we look at The Lion Guard,
05:52which shows Scar's transformation into a villain after a snake bite,
05:55it's clear his attempts to overthrow Mufasa started long before we met him.
05:59Given the brothers aren't exactly close,
06:01and Scar's feelings are pretty clear,
06:03why did no one think,
06:04hey, maybe we should keep an eye on this guy?
06:07My first plot for vengeance was spoiled when I lost the roar.
06:12My second plan later succeeded.
06:14Mufasa was king no more.
06:18Instead, they traumatized generations of kids
06:21with one of Disney's most devastating moments.
06:23Long live the king.
06:31Number five.
06:32Do Scar and Sarabi have a past?
06:35In the 2019 live-action remake,
06:37Scar casually drops the fact that he and Sarabi have a somewhat complicated history.
06:41We can finally take whatever we want.
06:44We?
06:46Long ago, you chose Mufasa over me,
06:50but now there is a new king.
06:51Now that Mufasa's out of the picture,
06:53he expects her to step up as his queen.
06:55Naturally, she turns him down.
06:57But seriously, they were just going to dangle that in front of us
07:00with no further explanation?
07:02Of course I meant no disrespect towards his majesty.
07:05Or Sarabi.
07:07As you know, I have tremendous respect for the queen.
07:14Was it an unrequited love?
07:16Or are we talking full-on love triangle?
07:18Scar claims she chose Mufasa over him.
07:21Okay, but why?
07:23Or was it even a choice?
07:24Maybe this is just his take on a bitter rejection.
07:27Or are they telling us that Sarabi once had feelings for Scar too?
07:30We need answers.
07:32Take your place by my side,
07:34and we will feast together.
07:37I will never be your queen.
07:42And from now on, the lions will eat after the hyenas.
07:48And they don't leave much behind.
07:50Number four.
07:51What was the exact moment Scar turned on his brother?
07:54If you've only watched The Lion King,
07:56you'd think Scar's grudge is just about being bumped down the royal line by Simba.
08:00Or maybe he's also salty that Mufasa ended up with the lioness of his dreams.
08:04Well, I was first in line.
08:06Until the little hairball was born.
08:08That hairball is my son and your future king.
08:13Oh, I shall practice my curtsy.
08:16However, The Lion Guard offers more backstory.
08:19Back when Scar was known as a Skari, or Taka,
08:22a cobra bite filled him with venom, literally and figuratively.
08:26But the strange lion was scheming and had a friend I didn't see.
08:31That's how I got my Scar.
08:38And what does Mufasa do?
08:40Be the loving big brother Scar needed?
08:42Nope, he mocks him and slaps him with the nickname Scar.
08:46That seems to be the moment Scar decided,
08:48you know what, this family sucks.
08:50Meant to be praised near and far for stopping that treacherous thing.
08:54But Mufasa just nicknamed me Scar.
08:57Then I knew that he shouldn't be king.
09:01So will the prequel lean into this sibling drama or take us in a whole new direction?
09:06Number three.
09:07What kind of relationship did Mufasa and Scar have before everything changed?
09:11The prequel reportedly follows Mufasa,
09:14an orphan who befriends and is taken in by Prince Taka's family.
09:17Yep, that's right, Mufasa bumped the natural-born heir from the line of succession.
09:22We do not associate with outsiders.
09:25Taka is the future king.
09:26We must protect the bloodline.
09:28Yet stories like The Lion Guard suggest they weren't always at each other's throats.
09:32Apparently there was a time when the brothers worked together to protect the pride.
09:37You and Taka together, that is home.
09:40Now both of you go find your place in the circle of life.
09:45It does make us wonder how much their parents may have contributed to their eventual rivalry.
09:50Surely the brothers were somewhat close before things fell apart,
09:53considering Mufasa tried to keep Scar in his life and never suspected he'd resort to fratricide.
09:58Hopefully the prequel will show us happier times when they were best bros.
10:02I have a secret, Mufasa. I always wanted a brother.
10:05I always wanted a brother.
10:07Number two.
10:08What is Scar's deal?
10:10We've talked a lot about The Lion Guard.
10:12It's essentially the only canon backstory we've had for Scar until now.
10:16Have I ever told you how I got my Scar?
10:20No. No, you haven't.
10:23I wasn't much older than Kion when it happened.
10:26Back when I was leader of my Lion Guard.
10:32It showed us how he went from being the leader of The Lion Guard to plotting against the king.
10:36Now with Mufasa, we don't know if they'll draw from that story or take a totally different approach.
10:42The circle is broken.
10:44There will be one Lion King.
10:47Either way, it's something we really want answers to.
10:51We know The Lion King is loosely based on Hamlet,
10:53but that still doesn't explain Scar's motives.
10:56Sure, the fact that Mufasa is his adopted brother does complicate matters.
11:00While we'll never forgive Scar for what he did,
11:02we're definitely curious about what pushed him to do it.
11:06That's why I still am Scarred.
11:11From when I led the Guard.

11:32Number 1. How did Mufasa become the king we know in The Lion King?
11:36A lion was born without a drop of nobility in his blood.
11:41A lion who would change our lives forever.
11:50Mufasa.
11:52As we mentioned, Prince Taka befriends an orphaned cub named Mufasa,
11:55who's then adopted into his family.
11:58Now, Mufasa must have been something really special for the king and queen to think,
12:02yeah, he's probably better suited to reign one day.
12:05We are nearing destiny, Mufasa.
12:07And so, the earth must shake.
12:11We're definitely curious to see that story unfold and watch Mufasa grow into the character we know.
12:17While Simba may have idolized his dad, there may be some who disagree.
12:21The prequel will likely show Mufasa's trials and errors on his path to kingship,
12:25and we bet not every step will be so regal.
12:27Overall, we imagine that this will be a tale of self-discovery as Mufasa
12:32finds his place in the circle of life.
12:34You and Taka together, that is home.
12:37Now both of you go find your place in the circle of life.
12:43What's got you lion-awake at night about Mufasa's past?
12:46Let us know in the comments what's the main question you hope gets answered.
12:50I did it!
12:51I saved her!
12:56You were saying?
