00:00Millions of pesos worth of smuggled rice was confiscated by the Bureau of Customs in the Department of Agriculture
00:07in different warehouses in Bulacan.
00:10Some of the rice that was confiscated is of poor quality.
00:14Denise Osorio is in the center of the news.
00:19The Bureau of Customs confiscated thousands of bags of smuggled imported rice
00:25that is estimated to be worth not less than 500 million pesos.
00:29The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Services or CIIS of the Bureau of Customs,
00:35the Philippine Coast Guard and the Department of Agriculture
00:38entered and raided the Shamna Warehouse last night
00:41after the DOC received intelligence reports
00:44of smuggled bags of imported rice and others that are old.
00:51We don't know their reasons.
00:55This was smuggled here and they are still selling it to the public.
01:01According to the DOC, it is possible that the price of the rice was lowered
01:06because of the hoarding from the past years.
01:08That's why thousands of rice were stockpiled by the owners.
01:12The DOC assured that if the smuggled rice was checked and inspected,
01:16it is possible that the government will repurpose it
01:19through a donation to the Department of Social Welfare and Development or DSWD.
01:24According to our President's directive,
01:26he doesn't want to waste the rice that we smuggled.
01:29If it is fit for human consumption,
01:32he will immediately donate it.
01:35Some warehouses need to be closed and padlocked
01:38because the caretaker or owner did not open it.
01:42The DOC added that they are not only repurposing the rice,
01:46but also mixing it with local rice
01:49so that it can be sold at a higher retail value as imported rice.
01:55The rice smuggled from Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Cambodia
02:01is usually imported because they have a large supply
02:05that can be exported to other markets.
02:08The violation of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act,
02:13the Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Act,
02:18and the new RA-12022 or Anti-Agricultural Economic Sabotage Act
02:23are being faced by the owners of the so-called smuggled rice
02:27if there is no document that can be issued.
02:30And if the value of their smuggled rice exceeds P10 million,
02:35it has no price.
02:37Denise Osorio for Pambansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
